We booked this hotel as a treat after some family bereavements. Chose the Gainsborough as it was great location and had the spa. The location was fab, we arrived late Saturday afternoon, so opted to pay £40 to park in their private carpark, concierge was very helpful and guided us to the small, secure carpark. We moved the car first thing into the NCP a few minutes walk away (£36 for 48 hours in there!) The room was spacious, huge comfy bed, huge bathroom. Bathroom was looking tired, with filthy dirty door, I suspect the cleaners don't see it as they wouldn't close the door whilst in there.. but dread to think the last time it was wiped, grim. Mini fridge was complimentary, first day we had 2 peronis, 2 waters and some cans of coke etc. Nothing gets very cold in the fridge, second day they only restocked us with 1 peroni and 1 water, third day it was replaced fully again. Also on that same day we only got one dressing gown in our room and one pack of biscuits, I thought it was pretty obvious 2 people were staying in that room, but i guess not. 3rd day the cleaners came whilst we were getting ready to go out for dinner, so we sent them away, so never found out if they would have replenished the biscuits and robes for 2 people. We booked to have a couples massage on the sunday afternoon, this was the first day we used the spa there. Lovely lady on reception checking us in, went over the spa experience and gave us some aromatherapy salts. We were really impressed with the spa and all the things you can use in there. a few chairs and loungers, with hot chocolate (very scrummy), water, infused waters, cold towels. However, was disappointed to find that when you go in your ”included” slots which is 8-10am and 7-9pm, the experience is not so nice. Very busy as everyone is trying to get in without paying £70pp and no hot chocolate or niceties. I think only allowing paying hotel guests to use the spa first thing in the morning or last thing at night and not having those nice little touches in there is very poor . Especially as this hotel is not cheap to stay in. The couples massage was ok, I have had better, but also had worse - but for £190 PER PERSON, I expected pure luxury, that it was not. Ladies shower area also stank of drains. We chose to eat brunch out every morning as the hotel was charging £40 pp for a hot breakfast. So overall, a very average stay for a £1,000 3 night booking. I think we'll stay in the travel lodge next time
