Dinner last night in a favourite place. A pianist playing 1930s tunes, silent almost invisible waiters, many of whom have worked here for years, Mr Rew the owner, dressed in white tie and tails, with the signature carnation in his buttonhole. The present fades and the past seems ever clearer. There is nothing ghastly and "bistro" here . No screaming. No canned music, no terrible "are you enjoying your meal?" stuff. This is the Real Old Fashioned Deal. As someone on another table remarked, "I have never seen a hotel quite like this".
