蓋拉羅克飯店(Gara Rock)

Absolutely perfect stay , gorgeous views, food and service we can’t wait to go back already. We’ve stayed in many spa hotels and this is one of my favourites. We had a lovely coastal walk, visit to salcombe by boat taxi and used the facilities including the cinema one evening was perfect birthday celebration Thankyou !

Stayed 3 nights in a Junior Suite and absolutely loved it. Huge balcony with sunloungers and swing chair. Suite also had a lovely roll top bath amazing shower and sofa/chairs. Just perfect! Oh and food/service was fantastic too. ❤️

The hotel is absolutely beautiful with incredible views and great furnishings. Spa was small but always quiet and peaceful. The room had everything we needed except for no hand soap in either of the bathrooms. We dined in the restaurant twice and the food was nice apart from the burger which was dry and tasteless. The breakfast was incredible with lots of choice. Restaurant staff are clearly young and inexperienced. We were never greeted on arrival in the restaurant we had to make our way over ourselves and find menus ourselves. Staff didn’t check up on us and didn’t seem to ever know what they were doing or the answers to our questions

This review pretty much mirrors a couple of the previous reviews on here. Stunning location,great hotel let down by poor service. Unfortunately I did not take the time to read the reviews on TripAdvisor prior to our booking as this would have at least set my expectations around poor service and possibly prevented our visit on this occasion. The theme of indifferent, inattentive service with constant reminders and having to chase orders is one that continued throughout our stay. Our brief stay began with us excitedly planning to return with friends later this year and also returning next June/July for a break - to us wanting to leave as soon as possible and not return. The service in this place is an embarrassment. On departing, the lady at reception explained that she would pass our comments on service back to Management. I then pointed out that, after this morning somewhat belatedly scrolling through recent comments on TripAdvisor it was quite evident that poor service was not a new phenomenon and I doubted if our feedback would be anything new for those in charge. I read somewhere online that a good rule of thumb for TripAdvisor was to add together the amount of 4 and 5 star reviews for an establishment and divide by the total of reviews Anything over 80% was preferable as a rule of thumb. I note with some interest that Gara Rock, on that basis, scores 69% We will not be returning.

Just go. You will not be disappointed. Beautiful apar**ents. Amazing views. Exquisite food (or self-cater). Indoor pool and outdoor pools neither of which were ever busy (we were there during school holidays). Great walk down to private beach (if you are fit and mobile). Beach is sandy, sheltered has rock pools and perfect for swimming (no lifeguard though). Plenty of room for people to enjoy football or cricket, kids to build sandcastles, dogs to chase balls, paddle board and swim or just sun bathe and snooze on the sand. There is also huge indoor and outdoor spaces to sit and relax with comfortable loungers and sofas. Tables to work (if you must) or just sit and drink with friends. You will be in no rush to leave.

We arrived with some friends on a sunny afternoon and wandered in to order drinks. We were told politely that they would not serve inside to non residents and were pointed towards a van parked outside. They had no cider, no soda, no lime juice and the list goes on. We eventually settled on some cans and were told then we could only use credit cards. Having visited with the possibility of staying in the future but nothing would drag me back

Beautiful location, incredible diverse walks. Friendly staff who work hard and are attentive, make a great impression and also really well cooked food with a good selection of specials, so you don’t get bored night after night (we stayed 5 nights). Even if expensive The Signal is value for money unlike the accommodation itself, where there is significant room for improvement. At £500 a night for 5 nights, here were some of our frustrations: * Cleaning, we were told at check in that due to covid (July 2022) the turn down service was available only upon request. We were not living in a covid world, the restrictions had long been lifted and such excuses still being wheeled out was not the welcome we anticipated after a long drive from London. After immediately requesting the service for all of our 5 day stay, so we didn’t go without, we were told cleaning can only be carried out between 3-5pm. No valid reason given, this seemed like a margin saving exercise at the mercy of your paying guests, who potentially are not able to access their room during peak down time, especially being 6 months pregnant in the summer. For that price per night not only would almost all expect a daily turn down (no excuses) every morning as standard but likely evening as well. * Breakfast, unbeknown to us when we booked, this was not included but a £20/pp per day supplement, even if you woke up and just wanted cereal. We spent £200 on breakfasts. * A bedroom without ventilation or air conditioning. This was not during the heatwave but our sleep was disrupted, despite the bedroom door being left open and using two fans which were not enough. The only window was in the bathroom (not an en suite) and sliding doors in living room which we didn’t leave park at night. The bedroom had nothing, a truly bad design. * whoever designed this room had zero common sense and used a generous spacious layout in an unpractical way. We had a fully kitted out dining room, yet no kitchen (not even a sink!). A room which sleeps two people does not need a large 4 person dining table, an enormous dresser which sits totally empty as it’s designed for crockery, plus they provide two large and empty side board console tables. The living area has two rock hard uncomfortable sofas and an armchair all to seat 5 people. This when we lived out suitcases due to no storage, so spent our holiday ironing! * No wardrobe, instead a small rail in the corridor, no drawers to unpack clothes, no where to store both cases (one case fitted beside rail in the corridor), no where to do hair and makeup *lack of proper shower, rather a shower head over a bath in a bathroom with low ceilings * the pool, it lacked any charm and felt soulless and septic smell was uninviting.

Despite local information leaflets saying that you could visit Gara Rock for refreshments we were turned away from having a drink at the sp****ly occupied bar. Maybe worth a try if you look more like the “right sort”. Shame, it looked like a lovely place to have a drink. Maybe get the leaflets updated?

NO! We have visited this hotel many times over the years. A perfect place to stop whilst walking the coastal path and enjoying the beautiful South Hams scenery, I guess that’s the reason why so many people visit the area. If you enjoy bird song, sound of the sea, tranquility and refreshments at a reasonable price whist enjoying the peace and quiet …BE WARNED!! The hotel now pipes music outside that can be heard on the surrounding footpaths which presents such an intrusion and totally spoils the local environment. However, for old times sake we went in for coffee but couldn’t believe how loud and inappropriate the music was outside on the terrace. We did comment to the staff and suggested the majority of people visited the area for the natural beauty and peace and quiet, but apparently we are wrong. “Lots of people really like the music we were told and “takes away the silence between people talking”. We also noted a big increase in prices plus a service charge, just to bring a coffee?! Maybe this was to cover the cost of their streamed music. As is our right we refused to pay the service charge. I didn’t like the girl’s attitude when she just said we can’t please everybody. I totally understand this, but I think in your customer training courses, you should maybe point out to your staff, if a customer has a complaint, don’t justify your personal opinion but refrain from commenting and say you will pass your comments on. Maybe the manager was away that day but if this is really what the management believe customers want, they have totally misunderstood the clientele. After visiting the old and new business for over 50 years, sadly we will not be returning and warning many of our friends who also visit on a regular basis. 10 out of 10 for spoiling what was a great place to stop
