I was hoping for a warm celebration of culture and comfort, but sadly, several aspects fell short. Room Quality: The room itself felt like a throwback to a bygone era with its '70s or '80s vibe, which wouldn't have been so bad if the air conditioning had worked. In a 5-star hotel, a functioning AC is pretty much a given, but mine left me sweltering and uncomfortable. Positive Aspects: It wasn't all bad, though. The hotel's location was spot on, right where you'd want to be in Tunis. And the view from my room was quite something – looking out over the city, I felt like I could soak up the spirit of the place, which was a small consolation amidst the other issues. Negative Aspects: The real kicker, though, was my experience at the bar. Normally, they serve alcohol to anyone asking, but because I was speaking Arabic on the first day of Islamicyear, I was suddenly not eligible. , I was told only foreigners could be served. It was so bizarre and frankly, quite insulting. When my American client tried to order for both of us, they insisted she'd have to drink both. I mean, really? Contrast with Other Staff: I will say, not everyone at the hotel was part of the problem. Some staff members were genuinely welcoming and professional, showing me that true Tunisian hospitality I had been excited about. Their efforts made the stay bearable, but it's hard to fully appreciate it when other experiences were so jarring. Conclusion: Overall, my stay at Africa Hotel Tunis was a mixed bag. The location and view were definite highlights, but they were overshadowed by the outdated and uncomfortable room, not to mention the unsettling experience at the bar. I'm struggling to give more than 2 stars, even though parts of my stay were good. The hotel needs to address these issues, starting with the basics like working air conditioning. But more importantly, they need to reassess their policies and staff training to ensure every guest feels welcome and respected, regardless of their language or background.
