The Louvre is one of the five most famous museums in the world, with the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Emmeta Museum in Russia (East Palace) and the Palace Museum in China. Its greatest feature is the collection of a large number of world famous paintings and sculptures, the collection of 400,000 pieces of art, the most famous of which is the Mona Lisa, Venus and the statue of the goddess of victory. The Louvre covers an area of about 45 hectares. The whole building is U-shaped. It is located on the North Bank of the Seine River in the centre of Paris, France. It is divided into two parts: the old one was built in the period of Louis XIV and the new one was built in the period of Napoleon. It is the oldest palace in French history. The Louvre was built in 1204 as a castle for the French Royal family. King Louis XIV saw the design talent of the architect Pierre Lescoe, which led him to rebuild the castle and form the Renaissance art style. In 1692, the Royal Collection began to be exhibited here, and paintings and sculptures were often exhibited. During the French Revolution, the French National Assembly officially decided to change the complex into a museum. After more than 800 years of expansion and renovation, it has formed such a magnificent world-renowned art palace. It is worth mentioning that the pyramid glass entrance in front of the palace was designed by the Chinese architect I. M. Pei. The Louvre's Spring Department Store is also a good place to buy duty-free goods. There are relatively few shoppers and tax rebates are very convenient.
