The Ryokan Kojoen is a family-run inn with old-fashioned service and dedication to its guests. The building has old world charm. For those who want a five-star hotel experience, this is not for you. The business (and the actual building) have belonged to the same family for over one hundred years. Every member takes pride in serving the guests. From the time we arrived, we were met us at the bus stop and our luggage was taken up to our room. Our room was comfortable with magnificent views of the lake. The bathroom was small, but we managed fine. It’s the price you pay for authenticity. The most amazing part of our stay were the meals. Each morning and evening, we were treated to various courses of meat, seafood, duck, rice, soup, and pickled vegetables in season. The dinner was always topped off with a dessert of ice cream and freshly baked cake. The staff explained each dish so that we understood what we were eating at every step. We have no food allergies or aversions, but we were asked when we registered, so there is flexibility with the meals. Breakfast can be Japanese or western style, and the times of the meals are arranged the day before for your convenience. This was five star flavor and service. We have no complaints.
