Having booked this resort more than a year ago, attracted by its location and its architecture, we received a notice less than a month before our trip (for early April 2024) that they were cancelling our booking in favour of a group who wanted the entire resort on an exclusive basis. We were just dumped from their booking without consultation. I rate that at the very bottom of customer service.

We had the most amazing visit to the Atacama desert and much of our great experience was due to our stay at the Nayara Alto Atacama hotel. We booked the full experience package which included everything for us. From our questions being thoroughly answered when booking, to our being pleasantly greeted and transferred from the Calama airport, to our planning of excursions with knowledgeable staff, to settling into our well appointed room, to enjoying the beautiful and delicious meals and drinks, to thoroughly enjoying the many excursions over three days, and being safely transferred back to the airport, we felt that we wisely chose the best possible experience in Atacama. We were able to see many of the different landscapes and experiences over three full days. Some of these excursions take place at 14,000 + feet which I found affected my breathing, so it was good to have a few days to acclimate to the higher altitude before attempting. It was so wonderful to return to such a beautiful and luxurious resort after our excursions. We highly recommend visiting Altacama and staying at the Nayara.

This was a huge disappointment and not up to the standards one would expect at a Leading Hotel of the World. We have stayed at the other Explora properties and while I have not seen the one in Atacama, that would be my recommendation for any visitors. We arrived at 6:30pm and were told that we cannot book any excursions because the excursion team leaves at 6pm. They also take 24 hours to plan, meaning that you are stuck with a day of doing nothing - likely to upsell their spa services. I attempted to book excursions in advance of our stay but was told it is not necessary. The property itself is gorgeous and the pool area is great, but the service, beginning from the manager, Rosario, is absurd. We waited over an hour to get water when we sat down to dinner, and even after bringing this to managements attention, the manager chose to delegate rather than just pouring the water. Really lazy and unprofessional. We paid for the Private Experience, only to arrive and learn that doesn’t exist and they apologized for charging extra. They also confirmed 2 queen beds but it ended up being twin beds because they don’t offer queens. Place honestly has no idea what’s going on half the time. Stay at explora.

Excellent excursions. Excellent guides. Excellent food. Excellent service. Excellent drivers. We loved it. A true gem in the Atacama desert, perfectly located for exploring the region and relaxing in the desert. Our best stop in Chile, by far.
