It cost my husband and myself £420 per night. That is what will be in my mind as I work my way through the review. The building and surroundings are beautiful - it is really pretty. The gardens are lovely, but the knot garden is not as in the photo on the website so don’t expect it. There needs to be more time spent on it, and on the rest of the manicured grounds. The terrace is lovely to sit and have a pre dinner drink. The room we had (room 1) was lovely but tired. It needed redecorating. The shower wasn’t adequate and needs changing for a rainfall/hand held shower unit. Corners of the room were dusty and the light in the wardrobe needed sorting out as it was often not connecting. The dining area is well organised with plenty of room around the tables for privacy. The food was not to the standard one would expect for the cost. Very disappointing that a cooked breakfast was an extra cost. The evening meal menu was not changed every evening and because it was limited choice was disappointing. If I wanted a cheese board for dessert it was extra cost. I was served port in a liqueur glass which is obviously the wrong size. I was also served brandy in a whisky tumbler and with ice, which I did not ask for. It was my birthday when we were there and the cake the kitchen produced was dreadful. It was a shabby attempt with little or no thought or care. My husband was quite upset. The staff were attentive, but hovering. They should not be whispering behind the screen in the dining room. It is easy to tell the difference between work talk and gossip talk. I hated them standing in a line watching us eat. I also hated the fact staff referred to me as ‘marm’. That is reserved for royalty and added a falseness. We thought the compulsory extra 12 and a half percent on top of the price of the room was unacceptable, and which is why we left no tips. The Receptionists were always helpful. The two staff who stood out for us were Gareth, the porter and the lady on Reception who lives on a farm and keeps sheep. I don’t know her name but she was not fawning, which is never necessary. I left my Kindle in the room and they were quick to return it, after I had covered postage. Overall, a good holiday but definitely not worth the money they took - over £2000 for four nights. We will not be going back and will recommend the Hall with reservations. We can’t comment on the Spa as we didn’t use it.
