Sounkyo is right at the start of the Daisetsuzkan national park - Sounkyo town was empty like a ghost town when we arrived, probably due to covid When we arrived there were no cars in the car park and we thought we were only guests, as it was empty felt a bit spooky. However it was busy in evening, people were probably just out sightseeing. - The in-hotel hot springs were great, they are old but functional - the outside rotenburo and bath were great , especially the sulfuric (eggy) onsen next to river was especially great. The food is of a really cheap quality don't expect much. - Bingo via a bingo machine was being held in the evening but we didn't go. The hotel caters for generally a more elderly crowd - The in hotel pajamas were cute. - due to covid everyone had to use plastic gloves for the dinner and breakfast buffet which was a bit bizarre but not the hotel's fault. The rooms are full basic, don't expect anything more. It was nice sleeping with the window opening to the river. After looking around the area there is no upper end hotel, everything looks rather old. Staff were friendly The rationale for staying here should be just a bed to crash in and to use the onsen after sightseeing during the day. It was relatively cheap which is why I give 3 stars if it was more expensive I wouldn't be happy.
