Booked this place for our 20th wedding anniversary and was left terribly disappointed. Having 3 children and with our anniversary being so close to Christmas, this was the very first time that we had ever celebrated it. I booked a bottle of champagne to be in the room on arrival, it wasn’t there. The staff did try to rectify this but as it was supposed to be a surprise for my husband I declined the offer. The money that I had paid in advance was then added as credit to our room. Fair enough, but what if I wasn’t intending to spend any more money there? We booked the suite which needs some updating. The ceiling had signs of damp and damage and the armchair was broken and wobbly. The wardrobe was tiny and had very few hangers. I booked the suite so that my husband could have a bath as he loves them. On the first night we couldn’t get the water to come hot so just put this down to it being late and the hot water being used up by other guests. We had showers and the water was also tepid to say the least. Nobody told us of any trouble with boilers at this point. In the morning we went down to breakfast in the hotel. They have the most ridiculously small juice glasses so I saw a couple of larger ones on an unused table and used these instead. As I have spinal issues and walk with a stick I thought this would prevent me having to go up and down the stairs numerous times to get more juice. The waiter in the restaurant had other ideas and told me it was forbidden to use the larger glasses and we had to use the small ones!! I told him that using larger glasses wasn’t the end of the world and to calm down as nobody had died!! The service after this was very frosty and both my husband and myself felt very uncomfortable in the restaurant. We went out for the day and after exploring the beautiful surroundings of the hotel came back. My husband wanted a bath to relax, again no hot water. He went down to reception to ask if there was a knack to getting water hot and the manager at this point told us there was a boiler issue but it should be sorted within the hour…. It wasn’t! I was already extremely disappointed with the establishment and wanted to leave in the morning. My husband convinced me to stay for the 2nd night, however if anybody had told us that there would be no hot water for our stay then we would have left that morning. By the time we were told about the issues, my husband had drank 3 pints and was over the limit to drive so we had to stay. The manager then refunded the money I had paid for the champagne back to my card and said the drinks and food would be taken care of. At this point though, I was so upset with our ruined anniversary that I couldn’t eat and only had 2 drinks. To be fair we were offered a room in the cottage to have a shower but as this is across the car park and I have mobility issues this was not an option for me. The manager also offered us a return visit which I declined as I have 3 children and live a 2
