托兒卡特山(Tollgate Hill)

In its heyday, I can imagine the Tollgate Hill Inn was a charmer. Sadly it has suffered over time and is now run down and in need of much TLC. It is actually for sale. The restaurant is closed, indeed the whole building it's in is shut down, and breakfast was not offered due to Covid issues. Our room was large and comfortable but upon closer inspection dust and dirt were obvious in the corners, sills etc. We did have a real wood burning fireplace and wood which was a nice touch but overall the place was a disappointment and poor value for what we paid. Cannot recommend it based on our experience there for one night.

This Inn could be nice with a lot of sprucing up. We went with a group of family and rented several rooms. The rooms were clean. The furnishings and beds are long past their prime. The downstairs restaurant/ dining area is no longer a functional eating space although there are tables and chairs. The kitchen space was left uncleaned and there is spoiled food in the unplugged refrigerator which stinks. The unused utensils were not cleaned after the last use many months ago. Hard to tell what happened there. If it weren't that there are almost no other places in the area we wouldn't have chosen Tollgate Hill Inn and can't recommend it except as a "last resort".

When I booked 2 nights, the young woman who arranged for our reservation was very pleasant and accommodating. She arranged for us to stay in a very nice room with a King bed, an outdoor deck and fireplace. I admire and love old homes. And I have always enjoyed staying in a B&B. This place is charming and has lots of history attached to it since it was built in 1745. The room we stayed in was clean and the King sized bed was comfortable. The problems with this place could be addressed, but there are so many. The plumbing is irregular and needs to be fixed. There are many areas that need updating. And we had a very bad experience in our room. Suddenly, in the morning of the 2nd day, a bat appeared and was flying all around the room. I ran out the door to the deck and left the door open. I didn’t know if it made it’s way out or had remained hiding in the room. Needless to say, this was very disconcerting. I was glad when we left the following morning. Another concern was that there was no one there when we arrived (which I could understand since we arrived late in the day). A key and note with it was left in the front hallway. But, we never saw a soul there during our stay except a couple of people who were also staying there. And they do not serve breakfast any longer. The place is for sale and it looks as though the owners have given up on doing anything to improve the deficits. So, we will not return and I do not recommend staying there!
