The Park Hotel in Galway is a busy understaffed hotel, physically the hotel is way dated...like 1970's vintage. The first floor layout is odd, broken up in small spaces and offers a crowded feel. We reserved a suit on the 1st floor which again was poorly laid out, large but tons of wasted space. There were two safe in the entry closest but the larger older one was obviously from another era, broken but rather than pull it out, they just left it here and put a newer one on top of it. This is how the whole place felt. The topper was that the bathroom ceiling rained large and voluminous paint chips on to the shower and bathroom floor. I mean in volume. Clearly this shower above had been leaking for years but no one fixed anything. Presumably there was lead in the fallen paint chips but we didn't stick around to test them out. The first morning we decided we had seen enough, and then came the torture of getting out of there with our next two nights payment. At first the clerk said they had no rooms. We said , "fine. We are checking out", Suddenly he then found replacement rooms but by then the damage was done. He had tried to bluff us. He then argued with us about getting a refund for the next 2 nights that we had pre-paid. It took a raised voice and stronger language to get a manager to waive off their 24 advanced cancellation notice. The other couple with us needed a walk in shower as my pal had a knee job recently. Their website pictures showed a walk in shower but that is not what they put our friends into. It was a bathtub with a shower in it...which he couldn't use. The hotel offered no alternative, no upgrade. They got their refund too after some direct talk. The Park Hotel location is good. But it needs to be 100% torn down and rebuilt to modern specifications. The dining room feels like a room from the Shining. Horrible experience.

Experience with the staff working in Reservations was unacceptable. Travel disruptions cannot be avoided sometimes. In this case, the hotel staff are not flexible or sympathetic. If you are going to Galway, there are plenty of other hotels to make a booking where the staff are friendly and respectful.

Avoid this hotel. Not sure why it says 4 star, 2 star at best and if it was noted as 2 star we would have been prepared. Nothing was like it seemed on the webpage, service was poor, food was ok and overall miserable experience. Nothing matched what we were expecting from our research. Our room was drab and uncomfortable, the bathroom shower was tiny even for European standards. The soak tub was not clean enough to tempt anyone into a bath. They demand payment up front at check in, it was only reason we didn’t leave.

Confused that most traveler considered a nice friendly place to stay and eat. We went to the park house restaurant and bar and the bar staff barely made eye contact. We finally got our drinks. Food is average and took forever to order and be served. Reference no eye contact above. We have been in Ireland For almost two weeks and the worst service and hospitality we received. Fortunately we did not go to Galway or this establishment first or we would have an unreal opinion of the friendliness of Ireland for sure. Thank goodness the rest of the county proved that Ireland is truly a wonderful place to visit. Just don’t go to the Park house restaurant!

Our first room smelled of sewer gas and the toilet in the second room wouldn't flush. As we moved to a third room, my husband asked if we might have a King size bed. We were surprised they charged us for an upgrade after having to move twice. Additionally, during our stay, there were a number of tour buses there. More than once, we were left waiting while staff attended to tour members. (Parking, check-in, breakfast)
