Really lovely boutique hotel with huge rooms, fantastic service and in a perfect central location. Wish we’d stayed for dinner instead of going to Hotel du Vin - abysmal! - so will definitely dine here when we come back. Special mention to Nick on reception who was so friendly and lugged our massive cases up two flights of stairs with a big smile on his face. Wonderful little place.

We frequented Southernhay House a few times these last two weeks to enjoy cocktails in the well kept garden. Lovely friendly staff and nothing was too much trouble for them. We found each experience peaceful and relaxing and it was lovely to be able to order a cheese board to accompany the red wine to have in the garden one sunny afternoon. Admittedly it is a little expensive but a lovely holiday treat for us both with a very good cocktail menu.

We had wanted to stay in the hotel for our son's graduation (we have stayed here before and enjoyed it) but they were fully booked so we opted to just have a meal in the restaurant to celebrate. When we booked (in February for a meal in July) we were required to pay a £20 deposit per head and commit to leaving the restaurant in time for the second sitting. We didn't have an issue with this as we expected the restaurant to be full. However when we arrived in July for our meal we were very surprised to see a completely empty restaurant! Bear in mind the hotel itself was fully booked so where were they all? By the end of the meal there were only 2 other tables occupied with a total of 4 other diners. The food was fine, it was ok. I think the issue was they had totally priced themselves out of the market. We paid around £60 per head for only 2 courses and no alcohol, and for this price we honestly expected something amazing and it just wasn't. It was good but it wasn't exceptional and certainly not special enough to warrant the price. It was so disappointing as we wanted to do something special to celebrate out son's graduation. The restaurant lacked atmosphere a it was so empty. The one plus was the waitress who was great - friendly and attentive but not intrusive. Based on this experience we won't ever stay there again, and certainly won't eat there again as we left feeling like we'd been duped.

Worst night sleep, nasty customer service. Our room here was nice enough but an incredibly annoying constant whirring noise kept us both up. We called the night porter who agreed it was bad and prob old pipes or the boiler. He opened another (very cold) room for us to sleep in. However, all our stuff was in the original room so we had to dip between 2 rooms. I’m 6 months pregnant so this was not ideal! After virtually no sleep we asked for a discount/room reduction. However, the manager insisted there was no noise, we were effectively lying and because we’d been allowed to sleep in another room there was no reason for a discount/compensation at all! This was very badly handled and I was very upset. Do not stay here. The place was dead so I assume everyone else already knows this but please learn from my mistake! You’ll get no sleep and be treated like crap.

Third and last stay at this hotel.  Spent £1,190 on 2 rooms for 2 nights to bring my mother for a treat.  On our second night, I was kept awake until nearly 1am by the noise of people in the bar and the staff clearing up.  I went down twice in my pjs to ask them to reduce the noise as I wanted to sleep.  The next morning the manager eventually and reluctantly agreed it would have been possible to at least shut the 2 doors to the bar and restaurant area so that the noise wouldn't have travelled so easily.  The owner was vile about it all and refused or didn't even understand that noise travels and has now banned me from returning (knowing I wouldn't)!  So don't stay in the Ivory room if you want some peace at 12.45am.  There was never anyone at reception to collect/leave keys with, and we would ring the doorbell repeatedly to try and get someone, look in the bar area etc but couldn't find anyone.  My observations on this and the consequent lack of security and possible impact on their insurance arrangements was again met with anger.    Cleanliness is also an issue - black mould in the shower, dirty carpet, clump of hair on the bathroom floor (which I had put from the shower into the bin but it was obviously dropped on the floor when the room was cleaned) etc.   No sheet on the under mattress.  Have seen from negative reviews elsewhere that this will be met with a horrible reply from the owners - they don't want to raise their standards or apologise for anything.

My brother-in-law had his wedding reception here, and the whole wedding party stayed. It was amazing!!! We were able to drop our stuff off before check-in. By the time we returned from the wedding ceremony, the lovely staff had kindly taken our bags to our room - a blessing as I've got dodgy knees, my husband has breathing problems, and there's no lift😄 We were in Silk. It was beautiful. The bed was so comfortable. The bathroom was spotless with a fabulous shower. The whole experience was incredible. Cocktails before dinner (I recommend the spicy marg😆) We had a private dining room, which was perfect for our small group - 8, including the grooms. The food was incredible and enhanced by perfect service. The following morning, breakfast was great. Loved the presentation of the yogurt, fruit compote etc. The pancakes, swimming in a lake of hot maple syrup, with bacon, just awesome. If, like me, you are a bit of a history nerd, you'll find the background to the house interesting.
