We stayed at the Elgin, Darjeeling for 3 nights. We had a premium room, at the lower level, in the Tenzing building. The hotel had already told us there isn't a good view from the room; it had 1 window facing a road. The hotel is in a good location; about 5 min walk from the central touristy location (char rasta). But walking on roads in Darjeeling is a pain, because the roads are narrow and there is constant traffic. The hotel reception staff were helpful, first with the booking and during our stay (checkin, checkout, etc.). There are 2 buildings where the rooms are located; it is better to get a room in the same building as the reception since it has better access to the sitting area, restaurant and bar. We were in the Tenzing building, which is a short walk away, which can be a bit of an inconvenience if it is cold or raining. The room was pretty spacious, with a bed (it was 2 small beds joined together and there are 2 twin mattresses with a small gap), 2 chairs, small table, TV. The bed was definitely not up to the mark: the mattresses were soft, bedsheet was too small so it would come off from under the mattress, the comforter was old & worn out without a proper cover. There was no central heating; there was a room heater which takes time to heat the room. There is no desk. This is an old hotel, with its charm, etc. but that also means that there are some small inconveniences. The bathroom was refurbished, so there was a geyser which provided hot water, a bath tub and a stall shower. There were some basic supplies like soap, sewing ket, dental kit - no shaving kit, limited towels. There is a small closet inside the bathroom with a small storage. Housekeeping doesn't do a thorough job; there was dirt in several places, including on the mirror in the bathroom. On our first day, there was no tea/coffee in the room; they provided it after we called. We ordered room service once, and it was fast. We had breakfast at the restaurant every day; breakfast is basic but good - juices, cereals, baked items, eggs, some Indian items like poha, idli, etc. We had dinner once and it was a big disappointment - the parathas were hard like papads. They also told us that dinner had to be pre-ordered before 7:30pm, but didn't tell us they have a buffet dinner. It was hard to understand the pricing, some common items were very expensive, and some other items like Indian curries were cheap. Overall, the room was functional, most of the staff was helpful and nice. We stayed at Mayfair during our previous trip and that was better (in the same price range).
