The Bull is situated in a particularly isolated and unpromising concrete wasteland. Don't let this put you off, however. As a pub, it deserved its loyal customers (goodness knows where they come from!) and is an unexpectedly appealing place to stay in Birmingham, especially for solo single-night travellers. The pub itself is surprisingly quaint and quirky inside, overflowing with antique china - much of it suspended from the ceiling - and a handsome gallery of great Irish writers along one wall. Hidden upstairs are a warren of rooms, of which mine - though basic, without a table and offering one of the ugliest views in Britain, was also spotless, well tended, quiet and comfortable, with a spotless shower-room. The place is an easy - if unsalubrious 15 minute stroll into the city centre. The gentleman behind the bar in the evening and the lady checking out in the morning were both relaxed, friendly and polite. A no-nonsense bargain.
