克雷格皇家飯店(Craig's Royal Hotel)

Great experience

We stayed for 2 nights - Saturday and Sunday. We fell victim to the hotel's "We're Going Greener" policy. A policy which was not explained at Check In - and the "sign" explaining it at Reception and in the room was of a colour and font size that made it almost impossible to read. Apparently we were required to ask to have our room serviced daily - something I have never heard of anywhere outside a serviced apartment - and to do so before 5 pm the evening before. When we took this up with staff, they were unhelpful, rude and eventually, begrudgingly, provided us with some clean towels. What is more insulting is that it is highly likely that this "initiative" has almost nothing to do with some noble commitment to the environment - it is a thinly veiled, cynical move to save on operational expenses. Craigs was once an iconic Ballarat establishment. It is no longer. It's a Pokies venue with a really poorly serviced hotel attached to it.

A proper goldfields experience with beautiful heritage fittings, and very nice rooms. If you’re getting in late go through the gaming room entrance, it’s a bit tricky there should be a sign but otherwise very good service.

We spent two nights at Craigs Royal hotel, the first night was spent in a room which was cozy. The bed was a Balinese style daybed that had only one side in which you could access. The other side had a fixed board which made it very inconvenient for my partner having to clamber over me in the night to go to the bathroom We were luckily moved to another room for the second night that had a bed with access from both sides. The main problem we had was when my partner left the hotel on the first morning at 7.30 am to fetch coffee. When he returned, he was unable to access the front door with the room card and had no other way of alerting the staff to enter, as the reception is only open from 8 am. He called me twice (first time in the shower), to come down to the front door to let him back in. Luckily, he took his mobile with him. There must have been a night porter somewhere. Although nobody was available to allow re-entry to the hotel until after 8 am, this is something which needs to be addressed.

The Craigs Hotel is an excellent historical place to stay in Ballarat. Easy parking out the front, easy safe streets to walk in the evening. Excellent food and service in the restaurant at reasonable prices. Good comfortable room with a morden bathroom in a renovated building.
