What do we see in those sharp black and white images from PIX magazine? Not just news stories and glamour shots, social issues and portraits of Australia … but shop signs, the price of potatoes, apron styles, children’s toys, workers’ haircuts and cracked pavements. Kate Evans takes us through a selection of images from the pages of PIX whose backgrounds and incidental details are as telling as the subject at the centre of the image. Who and what else do the cameras capture? Kate Evans is a well-known broadcaster, particularly as co-host of The Bookshelf on ABC Radio National, and a regular interviewer at literary festivals. From ephemeral letterbox flyers to rare tomes from centuries past, the Library collects a multitude of formats! Each year it adds approximately 57,000 published items to the collection, with a focus on documenting life in NSW and Australia. Join curators Alice Tonkinson and Sarah Morley for an evening of newly acquired published delights, including private press books, mid-century travel posters, ephemera and twentieth-century first editions. Sarah Morley is the Coordinator of Published Collections at the State Library of NSW. She has worked extensively with the Library’s archival and printed collections. Focusing on manuscripts, rare books and children’s literature, Sarah’s work encompasses collection acquisition, access, promotion and interpretation. She has curated numerous exhibitions and displays for the Library, most recently For All Time: Shakespeare in print. Alice Tonkinson is a librarian in the Collection Acquisition & Curation branch. With a background in history and museum and heritage studies, Alice has worked extensively with the Library’s maps, ephemera and posters collections. She has curated numerous displays and exhibitions at the Library, including Maps of the Pacific. Join a guided tour of new exhibition Dunera: Stories of Internment — displaying over 200 artworks created by the internees who live through this extraordinary little-known chapter of Australian history. Led by curators Louise Anemaat and Andrew Trigg, experience the stories of the internees from their harrowing journey to Australia to the realities of camp life and beyond. This tour will meet at the entry point to the exhibition (Level 1, Mitchell Building). Louise Anemaat is Executive Director, Library and Information Services and Dixson Librarian at the Library. She is the author of Natural Curiosity. Unseen art of the First Fleet (NewSouth Publishing, 2014), an analysis of the traditions of natural history art production in Australia and Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries. Christine Webb is interested in the play of colour, light passages, perspective, and internal and external spaces. Her vibrant paintings are expertly composed and direct the viewer’s eye to multiple points of interest within the canvas. I am delighted to present my 12th Solo Exhibition with Art2 Muse. I read my paintings like a diary of memories, current thoughts and wanderings. In the current climate an overwhelming desire for peace, a welcome retreat into my studio haven to create and insulate from external chaos. I collate a collection of photos as a record or note of the fleeting thought. I have immersed myself in the balanced Japanese compositional techniques of Notan, the serenity of woodblock printing and the influence these techniques have had on Australian artists Margaret Preston and Cressida Campbell. A. Celebratory trip to Seoul to seek the highly coloured and stimulating contemporary art, enabled me to pull all these disparate influences into my paintings and make them my own, a mix of abstraction and reality.
