Join Curatorial Assistant Maya Martin-Westheimer for a tour of Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf's current exhibitions, followed by an artist talk with exhibiting artist Ariel Ruby. Ruby will discuss her practice and the influences behind current exhibition The Italian Museum: Nonna's House, traversing themes of collective history, migration, and storytelling. Light refreshments will be provided. In The Italian Museum: Nonna’s House, Ariel Ruby transports us into the world of the Southern Italian migrant home, where scenes - like steam rising from a stovetop, an orchid’s delicate lip, a drop of oil in a bowl of water, or an empty liquor bottle on the mantle - are imbued with meaning. These seemingly ordinary gestures carry the weight of personal and collective history, shaped by migration, tradition, and the stories of those who came before. Through video, sculpture, and installation that's rich in kitsch and nostalgia, Ruby’s work invites us to reflect on the ways we carry our histories within us, and how the objects we surround ourselves with become markers of who we are and where we come from. Ariel Ruby is an Australian-Italian artist who creates immersive and animated installations that, using a variety of media, reflect on contemporary life. Ruby has exhibited extensively in Australia since 2015 and recently exhibited in Taiwan with The Jellyball Effect (2023). These sessions are open to the public and are uninstructed (meaning there is no teacher) life drawing at CDW Studios, Sydney. It is reserved, limited seating so you must book in advance. Easels are avail­able for use (first in best dressed) but you will need to sup­ply your own draw­ing mate­ri­als — pen­cils, paper, lapboards, etc. *IMPORTANT*: Seating is limited to 15 seats and these sessions do fill up so make sure you register! ​Come behind the scenes to see the Conservation Laboratory and the work undertaken by the Collection Care Branch. The Collection Care branch ensures the rich and extensive collections of the State Library are available to all those who wish to use them, now and in the future. The Collection Care Branch consists of several teams of conservators, registrars, and storage specialists with responsibility for the various aspects of collection care. The collections include many varied formats: books and serials, manuscripts, prints, drawings and paintings, photographs and negatives, architectural plans and maps, objects, film, oral history, and sound recordings. Please note: this tour is only suitable for ages 12 and up, and involves a significant amount of walking. The tour will depart promptly at 2pm and latecomers will not be admitted.
