Dr. Esther da Costa Meyer, a Visiting Professor at the Yale University School of Architecture, will be presenting an insightful discussion on the architecture of refugee camps. This thought-provoking event, titled "IN PERSON: Dr. Esther da Costa Meyer on the Architecture of Refugee Camps," will shed light on the correlation between colonialism and asylum seekers, highlighting how many refugees attempting to reach Europe originate from former colonies. A key focus will be on the vast size of these camps, which often resemble cities, and are predominantly located in the Global South. Managed by humanitarian agencies and NGOs, these camps face immense challenges due to the increasing number of refugees, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Nevertheless, a dedicated group of architects recognize the importance of involving refugees themselves, their knowledge, and their heritage in the design of shelter. This event, held in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, will take place at The Arts Club of Chicago, located at 201 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611, on October 5, 2023. Lit & Luz: An Artist Talk with Huehuecoyotl (Fernando Palma Rodriguez) will take place at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago. This event is part of the 2023 Lit & Luz Festival, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The festival aims to foster dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States through curated artist collaborations and a series of free programming in Spanish and English.
Huehuecoyotl, a visiting artist from Mexico, will provide a comprehensive presentation of his artistic practice that spans over three decades. His installations and robotic sculptures combine his background as a mechanical engineer and artist, using custom software to create complex, narrative choreographies. These works address important issues faced by indigenous communities in Mexico, including human and land rights, violence, and urgent environmental crises.
Accompanied by Esteban King, the visiting curator and Lit & Luz Visual Arts Director from Mexico City, Huehuecoyotl will discuss the themes and concerns behind his artistic practice. Huehuecoyotl, who resides in Milpa Alta, outside of Mexico City, also runs Calpulli Tecalco, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Nahua language and culture. An essential aspect of Huehuecoyotl's practice is his emphasis on indigenous ancestral knowledge and its integral role in contemporary life and shaping the future.
The event is presented by the Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts, in collaboration with the Media Arts and Design Program at the University of Chicago. It is part of the Lit & Luz Festival, which runs from October 13th to 21st, featuring a variety of bilingual events in Chicago and online. The festival's theme for this year is "TEN," commemorating its tenth anniversary and exploring the concept of having and not having. The full event schedule can be found on the festival's website.
