TYLER HILTON - CHICAGO BOOK SIGNING | Volumes Bookcafe
May 4, 2025 (UTC-6)
芝加哥
Join us as we welcome actor, musician, and now author, Tyler Hilton! Tyler will be at Volumes signing his new children's book, Daddy, Live in Concert. Each ticket equals a copy of the book for Tyler to sign! Illustrated by Eugenia Nobati, this adorable book will have you and your tapping your toes before bedtime. A rhyming picture book from singer-songwriter Tyler Hilton, with a musical bedtime routine to bring the house down!
Who’s ready to sing?
Who’s ready to play?
Then help me in welcoming DADDY on stage!
Daddy is going to bring the house down with a private concert in the living room. Bring all your stuffed friends to the living room and enjoy the show! From actor and musician Tyler Hilton comes a sweet window into the mind of a child, Daddy’s #1 fan, as her father serenades her with all her favorite nursery rhymes and bedtime songs. With hilarious illustrations by Eugenia Nobati, Daddy: Live in Concert is a rockin’ good time until bedtime. From a long line of musicians, Southern California’s Tyler Hilton started writing and recording at an early age. Discovered by KLOS Los Angeles radio hosts “Mark and Brian” at age 15, Hilton’s rise wasn’t wholly surprising. With his raspy, soulful voice, his lyrics and laid-back, catchy melodies, Hilton’s debut album, The Tracks of..., saw songs make the Billboard Top 40 charts and lead to collaborations with Taylor Swift (appearing in her video for “Teardrops on My Guitar”), Lady Antebellum, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Joe Cocker, among others. But it was his turn as Elvis Presley in the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and subsequent Grammy-winning soundtrack that launched a surprising acting career leading to multiple film and TV projects alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Halle Berry. Most memorable perhaps, was his role as musician Chris Keller on the CW’s One Tree Hill that led to a rabid international fan base and appearances on The Tonight Show, MTV’s TRL, and a feature in People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” Hilton’s newest album, the gritty and cinematic City on Fire was recently showcased on Showtime’s Shameless. Hilton currently resides in California and Ontario, Canada, with his wife, actress Megan Park, and their daughter, Winnie.

Ladies Who Lit at the Hyde Park Art Center | Hyde Park Art Center
May 8, 2025 (UTC-6)
芝加哥
Join Ladies Who Lit as we explore themes of cultural inheritance, embodied memory, and ancestral knowledge across two powerful mediums: visual art and fiction. The program begins with a private tour of Farah Salem: Uninhibited People of the Earth, led by the artist herself. Salem is a Kuwaiti-Iraqi interdisciplinary artist and art therapist based in Chicago. Her latest works reinterpret ceremonial and healing practices from the Arabian Peninsula through performance, sculpture, and video. Inspired by the teachings of her mother and grandmothers—who taught her to live in respectful relationship with the “ahl al ‘arth,” or spirits of the earth—Salem invites us to consider how we exist not in isolation, but in constant relationship with land, body, and unseen forces. In this exhibition, landscapes and bodies merge. Geologic time collapses into ritual movement. Ancestral knowledge is reimagined through a contemporary feminist lens to confront ongoing trauma, climate grief, and the marginalization of women and immigrant communities. Originally developed during Salem's Radicle Studio Residency at Hyde Park Art Center, this body of work continues to grow in scope and impact. After the tour, we’ll gather for a guided discussion of An Unlasting Home by Mai Al-Nakib. Spanning five generations of Kuwaiti women across shifting borders, ideologies, and class backgrounds, the novel offers a richly layered exploration of identity, language, and belief systems. Paired with Salem’s exhibition, the book offers an character-driven overview of the personal and political histories that shape women’s lives in the region and beyond. Books are available via LWL's Bookshop.org storefront, Spotify for audiobooking, or the library!

And when notorious culture critic Aly Ray Carter lights the final match by writing a scathing exposé, it feels as if Lola has lost it all. When Lola flees to the Hamptons to escape her mistakes, she expects to spend her summer drinking Minuty by the pool while carefully rebuilding both her confidence and her brand. Authors on Tap: Ivy Pochoda and Gus Moreno | Exile in Bookville
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC-6)
芝加哥
Please join us in person on Friday, June 20th at 7:00pm central to help celebrate Ivy Pochoda's new novel, Ecstasy. Ivy will be in conversation with Exile MVP Gus Moreno!
AboutEcstasy:
Lena wants her life back. Her wealthy, controlling, humorless husband has just died, and now she contends with her controlling, humorless son, Drew. Lena lands in Naxos with her best friend in tow for the unveiling of her son's, pet project--the luxurious Agape Villas.
Years of marriage amongst the wealthy elite has whittled Lena's spirit into rope and sinew, smothered by tasteful cocktail dresses and unending small talk. On Naxos she yearns to rediscover her true nature, remember the exuberant dancer and party girl she once was, but Drew tightens his grip, keeping her cloistered inside the hotel, demanding that she fall in line.
Lena is intrigued by a group of women living in tents on the beach in front of the Agape. She can feel their drums at night, hear their seductive leader calling her to dance. Soon she'll find that an ancient God stirs on the beach, awakening dark desires of women across the island. The only questions left will be whether Lena will join them, and what it will cost her.
Ecstasy is a riveting, darkly poetic, one-sitting read about empowerment, desire, and what happens when women reject the roles set out for them.
About the authors:
Ivy Pochoda is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Wonder Valley, Visitation Street, These Women, and Sing Her Down which won the LA Times Book Prize. She won the 2018 Strand Critics Award for Best Novel and the Prix Page America in France, and has been a finalist for the the Edgar Award, among other awards. USk Chicago is a regional chapter of Urban Sketchers (USk), a nonprofit dedicated to fostering the practice of on-location observational sketching. The Seminar's goal is to celebrate and practice the art of on-location sketching in our beautiful and artful city - Chicago. We hope to bring a Symposium-like experience to our chapter and our friends from other locations on a much smaller scale. The Seminar offers exciting workshops and opportunities for participants to network and socialize. The Seminar is designed to help absolute beginners and experienced artists alike develop the sketchbook habit, try new things, and practice sketching in public. Workshops will be taught on the sidewalks and in the parks of Chicago, giving ample opportunity for you to practice sketching the motion of this city. We hope you'll join us! Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwals are masters of Qawwali Sufi music. They represent the twenty-sixth generation of original thirteenth-century Qawwals, connected to Hazrat Amir Khusrow, a poet, philosopher and musician, who invented the art of Qawwali.
Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad Qawwal are direct descendants of Miyan Saamat Bin Ibrahim and received rigorous training in classical music and qawwali from their father, Ustad Munshi Raziuddin, who was also a legendary qawwal. Fareed Ayaz now leads the group, along with his younger brother Abu Muhammad. Their trained sons join them, making up the rest of the musical core of the ensemble.
Their performances are known for their intense passion, profound spiritual depth, and the intricate interplay of vocals and rhythm. Weaving together devotional and secular traditions, the group also performs semi-classical forms including tarana, thumri, and khayal.
Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwals have been bringing South Asian Qawwali to international audiences for over 40 years. Their music has been featured in the 2012 film The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and in 2017 they were the focus of a special BBC Proms concert. The group has performed many times in Pakistan’s Coke Studio. Their performances of “Kangna” in season 4 and “Piya Ghar Aaya” in season 11 have received record viewing worldwide.
