河姆渡遺址的發掘為研究當時的農業、建築、紡織、藝術等東方文明，提供了極其珍貴的實物佐證，是中國建國以來最重要的考古發現之一。河姆渡遺址發現的栽培稻穀和大面積的木建築遺迹、捕獵的野生動物和家養動物的骨骸、採集的植物果實及少量的墓葬等遺存，為研究中國遠古時代的農業、建築、制陶、紡織、藝術和東方文明的起源以及古地理、古氣候、古水文的演變提供了極其珍貴的實物資料。

河姆渡遺址是中國晚期新石器時代遺址，是中國已發現的最早的新石器時期文化遺址之一，主要由文物陳列館和遺址現場展示區兩大部分組成，在這裏可以觀賞出土文物。
