The centre of all modern Thai political upheaval, the Democracy Monument cuts a forlorn figure amongst the colonial era buildings on Ratchadamernon Ave. The monument itself was, rather ironically, commissioned by a fascist, designed by an Italian and inspired by fascist symbols. It has become the go to place for any political struggle, being the scene of numerous large demonstrations in the last 40 years. In 1973 and 1992 it was the scene of protester deaths in the political movements at the time.
