There are many bridges on the Voltava River in Prague. The Charlie Bridge, which was built in 1357 and completed in 1400, is the first bridge built by Prague on the Voltava River. It has a history of 650 years. Charlie Bridge has become one of Prague's most famous historic sites with its long history and architectural art. The bridge was built in accordance with the order of Czech King Charles IV, so it was named Charles Bridge. It is the largest existing ancient bridge in Czech Republic and the main road connecting the old city of Prague, the small town and the Prague castle. At one end of the bridge, a statue of Charles IV (the first picture) stands at the entrance, flanked by a Gothic portal with a baroque relief. There are 30 statues on the stone railings on both sides of the bridge. They are all masterpieces of the 17th and 18th century Baroque artists in Czech Republic. They are known by Europeans as the "European Open-air Baroque Statue Gallery". The most famous sculpture on the bridge is the statue of St. John. Visitors will rush to touch the statue in order to bring luck. The statue was exhibited at the Shanghai World Expo (last picture).
