A Day in Kamakura: A Cozy Seaside Escape from Tokyo
#favouriteitinerary One of my favorite day trips was a visit to Kamakura, Japan, a charming seaside town just an hour from Tokyo. We started our day with an early train ride, buzzing with excitement as we switched to the quaint Enoden train. The journey was a scenic delight as we made our way to Café Yoridokoro, where we enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast. The warm grilled fish, fluffy meringue egg with a perfectly runny yolk, paired with the passing Enoden trains outside the window, set a cozy and unique tone for the day.
Next, we headed to Shichirigahama Beach, where the tranquil ocean stretched out before us, with the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji adding an extra layer of magic to the view. The crisp winter air made it all the more serene, offering the perfect moment to pause and take in the beauty of nature.
We continued our adventure with a ride on the Enoden train to Koshigoe Rakko Park. This hidden gem offered a beautiful view of Kamakurakōkō-Mae Station, and the sight of nostalgic trains passing by added a charming touch to the peaceful surroundings.
The highlight of the day was definitely visiting the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple. Standing before the colossal bronze statue, we were in awe of its sheer size and the profound sense of history that enveloped it. It was a humbling experience that left a lasting impression.
Afterward, we wandered down Komachi-dori Street, a lively market where we couldn’t resist trying the Buddha-shaped pancake from Tomoya Kamakurakomachi. It was as delightful as it was unique! We ended our day with a peaceful visit to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, a serene place to reflect on the day's adventures.
As evening approached, we hopped back on the train and returned to Tokyo, our hearts full of the beauty and tranquility we had experienced in Kamakura. It was the perfect day trip, combining history, nature, and culture in one unforgettable journey.
