While we enjoyed breakfast at Starbucks Reserve (Beijingfang) and appreciated the quiet, uncrowded atmosphere in the morning, one aspect stood out in a less positive way — the service. Yes, the staff were polite, they smiled, and everything was done according to procedure, but the interaction felt formulaic and lacking genuine warmth. Starbucks has always branded itself on personalised service and human connection, yet that signature warmth felt missing here. The smiles felt rehearsed rather than sincere, and there was little sense of engagement beyond basic transactional interaction. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated experience. Having visited Starbucks outlets in multiple cities across China, I’ve noticed a similar pattern — consistent service standards, but often emotionally distant and somewhat “scripted.” This is particularly concerning given how competitive the coffee market is in China today, with strong local brands offering not just good coffee but also friendlier, more authentic service experiences. While the coffee quality remains reliable, Starbucks may need to pay closer attention to service culture if it wants to maintain its edge in such a dynamic market.
