🦆 Quanjude Roast Duck 全聚德 (Qianmen Store) — Famous Name, but the Overall Experience Fell Short

On our first night in Beijing, we decided to visit the most iconic roast duck restaurant—Quanjude Roast Duck (Qianmen Store). As one of China’s most historic and internationally recognised brands, this branch is often viewed as a must-visit for tourists. The restaurant is massive, with at least two levels of dining space, and its exterior carries the charm and presence of a long-standing heritage establishment. However, the actual experience fell short of expectations. We were seated on the second floor, but the reception at the entrance felt cold and unwelcoming. The staff member spoke without warmth, and the attitude lacked the professionalism you would expect from such a famous restaurant. Our table server was also indifferent, offering minimal engagement and virtually no hospitality throughout the meal. The unfortunate part is that the food itself was quite good. The roast duck was well-prepared—crispy skin, tender meat, and solid flavour that reflected traditional craftsmanship. The other dishes were decent too. But when service is poor, even delicious food loses its shine, especially considering the restaurant’s fame and steep pricing. And speaking of pricing, Quanjude’s roast duck is among the most expensive in Beijing. During our trip, we tried several other roast duck restaurants—both traditional and modern—and many offered equally good flavour with far better service and atmosphere. It became clear that Quanjude leans heavily on its brand name rather than delivering a complete, satisfying dining experience. In summary: ✔ Good food; the roast duck remains classic and well-executed ✘ Service lacking warmth and professionalism ✘ High prices without matching overall experience If it’s your first time in Beijing and you want to check off a “legendary restaurant,” Quanjude (Qianmen Store) is worth trying once.
