Elmwood 1820 Bed & Breakfast Inn

We stayed three nights at the Elmwood. The home is breathtaking as you pull up. It is the most grand home on the block so cant be missed. Richard the owner was so welcoming and we enjoyed him sharing about the amazing collection of art and decor that is throughout the home and most collected during his world travels. This was a last minute trip for us and it came highly recommended so we knew we had to stay here. Richard called me upon receiving my reservation request and worked with us. We were able to stay in the Painter and Explorer rooms. Both are beautiful and very comfortable. Richard serves a delicious and hearty breakfast each morning. I think he is a culinary chef and does not admit it. Everything he made was amazing. The evenings we enjoyed relaxing in the living room with a glass of wine which is available through out the day/evening. Miss Lemon is the house cat and is so sweet and beautiful. Five couples rented out the Elmwood 1820 and had a wonderful get away together! We enjoyed the happy hour in the living room bar with a charcuterie board and French macarons. We drew envelopes for our rooms and we ended up with the Romantic! Large bedroom with canopy bed. Large rainfall shower that looked out to the water and had the softest, fluffy towels. The sitting porch was great for the coffee and tea delivered at 7am. What a great way to wake up! Ceiling fans and ac unit kept the room comfortable even though it was 85 degrees outside! Ten of us gathered in the dining room for a scrumptious breakfast together! Squash au gratin soufflé was delicious and the fruit cup, bacon and biscuits with jam were heavenly. It was an unexpected delight to stay at the Elmwood and I highly recommend the Bank bistro just down the road for dinner!

This was our second visit; the first during the Covid epidemic. Of course, this one was much better. The accommodations are top notch and the breakfasts "strong thumbs up". A number of restaurants and shops are walkable from the B&B (about .5 mi).

An antebellum mansion which has settled into a comfortable middle age. Eclectic furnishings, comfortable chairs everywhere. Huge rooms. Lovely hosts. This would be a great place for a small family reunion or a wedding party. So many places to socialize and private spaces too. I had my generous tasty breakfast on the veranda on a gorgeous day. Washington is a good place for a small town vacation.

After seeing an episode on YouTube featuring Washington NC, my husband wanted to explore this area of the Inner Banks. I picked this property from Trip Advisor because of the reviews, the photos and the ways the rooms are named. We booked 2 days for Labor day Sunday and Monday. Arrival was easy with contactless entry, with a very informative packet waiting for us. We explored the common areas and the grounds. As there were a few rooms unbooked, (school had just started and vacationers were heading back home) the owner and proprietor Richard actually let us explore and pick a room! Even though the pictures on his website are beautiful, they do not do this stunning place justice. The house itself is grand. The formal rooms and suites are an eclectic mix of art, some period touches honoring the house's era, and some surprising use of modern design. Each suite is named for the type of people that might be drawn to the beautiful home, The Writer, The Painter, the Gardener, the Explorer, and the Romantic. Each room is a crafted stage setting that really gives a unique yet welcoming feel. The linens are sumptuous and the bed very comfortable. We have often stayed at B&Bs and breakfast can sometimes be a disappointment. NOT HERE! We were given a choice of where we wanted to eat, either in the room, the lovely porch, or the formal dining room. And we were also given a choice of early coffee/tea service in our rooms. The delicious breakfasts were beautifully plated, and had 2 or 3 courses, they have ruined us for any other breakfast. Squash cassoulet, with Applewood bacon, feather light biscuits with homemade preserves, and a yogurt and fruit parfait was just one of the amazing meals we enjoyed! His memory for our preferences were touching, and subtly done. We actually extended our stay one day, luckily Richard could honor our request. We will definetly be coming again. This property is a can't miss if you are traveling to Eastern North Carolina. Sitting just a short walk from the downtown section of Washington, NC, this absolutely beautiful Inn is simply a wonderful place to stay. Starting each morning with a sumptuous breakfast prepared by Richard your Innkeeper, the comforts continue throughout your stay. The parlor always has 3-4 bottles of wine ready for consumption. There are soft drinks, water, ice and snacks readily available. We stayed in The Gardners Room on the first floor with a marvelous bed and really comfy sheets. An in-room basket of snacks (including some dark chocolate Milano cookies) was such a nice treat. I could go on and on, suffice it to say... we will be back! Do yourself a favor and STAY HERE!!
