Overall the Waldhotel is a nice hotel that seems to cater to mostly a domestic crowd. The restaurant staff and amenities were clean and welcoming. The hotel is located in the woods near many athletic complexes that range from soccer fields, a rock climbing facility, an ice skating rink, an outdoor parkour and a children's playground. Consequently, the hotel has an upscale Olympic village feel. Our family of 4 stayed here during the summer while there was an excessive heat warning with temperatures over 34C. The proximity to the woods and shaded playgrounds made for a relatively pleasant stay. One incident tainted our experience however. We were returning from the playground and entered the lobby where there were free personal bottles of water. As our young children we're a bit hot from playing outside, we grabbed two bottles and started filling them into their child friendly water containers. The bottles were glass so we didn't want our 4 and 7 year olds running around the lobby with breakable glass bottles. As we were filling up the bottles a lady from the front desk walked over and said in a stern voice that water bottles are only for hotel guests in the lobby. Being a bit confused, we said that we were guests at this hotel. But she continued, that the bottles of water are not meant for refilling and walking away but for hotel guests staying in the lobby. We hadn't even left the lobby, so how would she know we weren't going to mull around the lobby? In fact we were going to cool off in the lobby with kids and then head right to the hotel restaurant. Had the bottles been plastic we would have not transferred them. As adults we didn't even grab any waters because we knew we'd be eating in the restaurant in a few minutes anyway. The whole thing was bizarre and another hotel guest who was about to grab a water himself seemed confused as well and opted not to grab a water, likely to avoid being publicly scolded like we had been. Best case scenario, the lady was anticipating us using their free water bottles as a water refilling station and wanted to put an end to it before it started but misread the situation in her zeal to make a point. Worst case she was stereotyping and racist, as we were simply dressed and clearly not German. Either way she made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome as paying hotel guests. We've stayed at top resorts in Hawaii where it's quite common to have free water available due to the heat. They either leave it out for guests to use as they choose, or if they ration water, they explicitly offer water during checkout but don't leave it out. The hotel would be wise to follow this model vs. hotel staff publicly scolding guests, which in many cultures is the ultimate insult. Even though everybody else at the hotel was friendly and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, one bad experience can taint an entire stay. So I'm not sure we would stay at this hotel again and would be hesitant to recommend the hotel
