Do not book your stay at Hotel du Lac! You have been warned!! This hotel along with Hotel Royal Victoria are owned by a Milano business man, who over charges its guests. The service is terrible, the employees even laugh about how poor the hotel is run. No food, not even coffee is offered on Monday and Tuesday, it's the summer season, food service is not offered. You have to walk to the sister hotel Royal Victoria that thinks its okay to charge $75 USD for a bowl of pasta!

We spent four nights at the wonderful Hotel du Lac in Varenna, on Lake Como, in late September. Since returning we’ve heard that the hotel has been sold. I sincerely hope that the new owners do not change too much, as it was such a beautiful, family run property and there is little sense messing with something that works so well. The hotel is ideally located on the edge of the lake and literally seconds from the main square. We stayed in Room 10, a room with a private terrace overlooking the lake. The views were simply magnificent. We had breakfast included which was served in the Ristorante du Lac, again overlooking the lake. On the first morning we ate outside on the terrace, but the other mornings were chillier, so we sat inside at the window. Breakfast was served with an array of yoghurts, cereals, breads and pastries placed in from of you on a tiered tray. Hot food was then ordered from a menu, and it was always of excellent quality. Coffee, as you would expect in Italy, was always good. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were there to offer any advice on anything. The room was cleaned each day to perfection. We did eat dinner on our last evening in the hotel restaurant, which I have reviewed separately. Wonderful food in wonderful surroundings. This was a very, very good hotel, and as I’ve previously stated, I do hope that not too much changes under its new ownership.

This hotel was recommended to us by friends and it did not disappoint. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. They cleaned our room every morning and freshened it each evening including fresh towels each time. The bed was very comfortable - not too soft. Great water pressure with lots of hot water. Great flushing toilet. The view from the hotel is fabulous. We went to see the Grand Hotel Tremezzo and thought we had the superior view at Hotel du Lac. The breakfast each morning is included with the room. There is a buffet of pastries and cheeses. And you can order a variety of eggs or omelets and the bacon is delicious. There is great hiking nearby. I recommend the hike to the castle Vezio and its gardens. Also lots of nearby bars and restaurants. We had dinner at the hotel our last night with their tasting menu - fantastic. Highly recommend this hotel.

Location could not be better. View of water and sound of lapping water to sleep by. Breakfast delicious. Staff much more than simply pleasant and accommodating — they truly made us feel like family and honored guests! Thank you to all the staff—every single one of you made our stay there perfect.

Nous sommes seulement allé au restaurant mais c’était incroyable. L’accueil très prestigieux, la vue sur le lac est très apaisante et le calme est au rendez vous. Très peu de table donc il est préférable de réserver à l’avance. Les prix sont légèrement élevés mais le cadre et la qualité du repas en valent largement la peine. (86€ pour 2 avec plats, desserts, et vin compris) Allez-y les yeux fermés et vous en ressortirez très satisfait.

I read reviews that some of the rooms on lower levels are dank and dark, and that may be the case given how the hotel is built into a hillside. But I booked the most expensive room with a terrace and lakeside view and was quite pleased. Unfortunately, the hotel was booked, so I had to book another room elsewhere (Royal Victoria), which was within walking distance but nearly twice as much for a much smaller room with a tiny lakeview balcony. I decided on Varenna instead of Bellagio because the train station is there, and the morning of my departure, I needed to be at the train station early enough that I didn't want to risk being delayed on a ferry back from Bellagio. Varenna is a wonderful town that is almost as spectacular as Bellagio. The service at Du Lac was just as stellar as I read about on other reviews. The room furnishings are nothing spectacular, but the bed was quite comfortable. The buffet breakfast was amazing and included a wonderful lake view. By comparison, the buffet breakfast at Royal Victoria was just as nice, also with a wonderful view. I think that splurging on a nicer room at Du Lac is better (and cheaper) than a basic room at RV. Plus, Du Lac is closer to the waterfront walkway. Although hotel RV offered complimentary shuttle to the train station (which is walkable though a good distance to walk).
