Stayed three nights here with a party of 34 touring the islands. The hotel and room was spacious but lacking any leisure facilities or outside seating other than a couple of small metal benches. It was very hot when we stayed but we were unable to open the window more than a few inches. The noise of a wedding penetrated into the early hours one night. The food offerings for our party were poor and repeated plain we'd had in an earlier hotel. Menus were like something from the 1960s - soup, melon, pate; a meat dish, a fish dish, a veg dish, all with the exact same vegetables every single night. We had to choose at breakfast time so there was a feeling of dread all day. On the final night I thought I'd try vegetable strudel which turned out to be a soggy samosa triangle, doused with tomato sauce and filled a tasteless mush. The plate was a travesty in brown (see photo). When offered something else I asked for salmon which was also on our menu but was told that was ordered in and there wasn't any spare. I settled for mackerel paté (a starter the previous evening) which was served with as a big portion with crusty bread, oatcakes and a good mixed salad. We looked on in envy as other guests were served mussels and other local seafood. Bar drinks were expensive. Breakfast was in a separate room for us, a buffet of cooked British food and sliced bread for toast; no rolls, pastries or decent bread. When my cousin went down at 8.30 one morning the dishes were bare and another guest said she'd been told there was no more food. It's impossible to know what proportion of the money paid for the holiday (£1150 each) was allocated for food but we expected some Scottish specialities so we were very disappointed with the menus. We have told the tour company of our dissatisfaction. For other travellers, be warned the hotel is a good 20-30 minute walk from the harbour and shopping area.

Lovely old style hotel, Great breakfasts and extremely friendly helpful staff. Hotel in in mid renovation, which you hardly notice. Very well placed for walking or driving around the surrounding areas. Well placed for visiting “Harris Gin Distillery “ We really enjoyed our stay

Having stayed in most hotels in Stornaway this is one of the best. I opted for a single room as I was working away and like most hotels with single beds the duvet was far too small meaning I woke up almost every time I moved. The room itself was well kept and clean, the bathroom was a little cramped. I only had dinner one night out of three. It did seem a little pricey to be honest although the food and service were great!

Very disappointing meal, an expensive waste of money, we will never return. Festive menu…starter was ok but the Turkey dinner was appalling. Very sad for such a prominent and popular hotel in Stornoway

Our last stage on our two week trip to Skye & Outer Hebrides, at last a proper modern hotel! Good room well furnished with comfortable bed & Arran Aromatics toiletries in the modern bathroom. We ate one night in The Cleaver Restaurant. Good service and food, I loved the seafood risotto with langoustines. Good Gin & Whisky bar for pre & post dinner tipples! Breakfast on our first morning was excellent but we had an early start for the 0700 ferry on the second morning and were too early even for the 0500 Continental breakfast service!

Stayed here for 2 nights while on the Isle of Lewis and Harris. Comfy rooms, with almost everything you would expect. Staff very friendly and helpful and full of knowledge. Breakfasts were good each day, and they even packed breakfast for our very early departure the next morning. Our group had 2 dinners here, and they were lovely too. Full credit to Marcus for being everywhere all at once and being so hospitable, and for the chap on night duty who used to be a pedal-loom weaver and could tell us more about the process. The only complaint was the shower over the tub -- the drop from the floor of the bath to the floor of the bathroom was about 8 inches and there are NO grab rails that could be called useful when getting out of a shower when dripping wet. Very dangerous. Heated towel rail was perfect for drying socks and undies!
