Enjoy this cozy 3-bedroom home perched up above the Catskill woods with a spectacular view of Overlook Mountain, the center of Tibetan Buddhism in North America and recognized as a sacred site by the Iroquois Confederacy at the Council at Onondaga in 1979. All 3 bedrooms lead out onto the west-facing deck for majestic sunsets. Great hiking trails abound and winter ski resorts are a 20-30-min drive.On the east side of Big Blue you will look out into the forest from the 400 sq ft deck with a BBQ grill and patio table for outdoor meals. In the mornings sunrises filter through the Red American Oak and Shagbark Hickory trees, growing down a forest embankment leading to Plattekill Creek with a bridle path along it for secluded walks. You'll see deer and foxes and chipmunks scurrying around and the occasional black bear lumbering around. We have very fast wi-fi and one of the 3 bedrooms also serves as a great place to work remotely while looking out at the mountain view. We just renovated the whole house and it has a fabulous kitchen and living space, and a state of the art induction stove. We are solar powered and use no fossil fuels for cooking or heat, and we're connected to the electric grid so there is never a shortage of electricity but in fact we generate enough power with our solar array that we are mostly feeding the grid.The master bathroom is a beautiful bright space lined with Portuguese tiles, a lovely place to soak in the tub or the glass shower while looking out the window at the forest.We are on a quiet country road that makes for easy walks, but there are many trails in the area including the remarkable Sloan Gorge. The renowned Opus 40 sculpture park is 5 minutes away. Also the wonderful Smokehouse of the Catskills is a 5-minute drive. Also kayaking and skiing are activities you can enjoy in the area.There are several great restaurants in Saugerties and Woodstock that you will find in our guidebook at the house.Big Blue is only 10 minutes to Exit 20 on the NY State Thruway (I-87), 10 minutes to downtown Saugerties, 12 minutes to downtown Woodstock, 30 minutes to Hunter Mountain Resort, Rhinecliff Amtrak Station is 25 minutes away and there is taxi service from the station. The Houtman Retreat is very special property. Located between Saugerties and Woodstock, the house is sited on a quiet country road, and while the property is private, it is not isolated. The interior is just as special: 4 bedrooms and three baths, well separated for privacy but with spacious common areas for comfortable conviviality. (We can offer a 2-bedroom, 2-bath version for less cost if you need a smaller space.)There is a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and a gas fireplace in the sitting room. There is a spacious kitchen, well stocked, and in another area is a prep kitchen just in case you’re cooking for a crowd. And if two kitchens aren’t enough, there is an outdoor kitchen in back with a gas grill, a smoker, and a pizza oven!For fun in summer, we have a 4-foot deep heated pool that is available 3rd week in May through third week in September. The hot tub is available all year round. And for more fun any time, a lovely walk down the path behind the property lands you next to the stream. Take a lazy walk along the cleared path, or just sit and look and the water flowing and the wildlife moving about. The style was carefully chosen and executed. The atmosphere is calming and restful and, above all, comfortable. The upstairs master provides a king-size bed. Downstairs we have 3 bedrooms, one hosts a queen bed and a view of the pool, another has a king, and the 4th bedroom has bunk beds—a twin on top and a full on the bottom.We provide all linens and towels for both the bath and the pool/hot tub. There is wood for the fireplace and firepit, and gas for the grill and the gas-burning fireplace. As well, there are many amenities such as soaps and shampoos. THE HIDDEN COTTAGE is tucked away in the woods on 4.3 acres, off a quiet country road where you can have privacy without being isolated. Located halfway between the Village of Saugerties and the Town of Woodstock, it is easy to get to anywhere you want to be. But the cottage is so low-key and relaxing, you may not want to go anywhere else! This special home was converted from a garage and added onto, providing over 1500 square feet of space. The common space is large and airy, open concept, with everything you want nearby. The woodstove adds coziness and warmth on cold winter nights or cool summer evenings. We have a TV for streaming and a Foosball table for playing. The spacious dining table seats 6 for the enjoyment of the meals you prepare--the kitchen is well stocked with appliances, cookware, and utensils.The bedrooms are nicely sized and comfortable, and with a dedicated workspace in both the office room and in the master bedroom, it’s easy to do your work and have the quiet you need. The master bedroom has a king-size bed. The room is large and open and looks out onto the backyard where you’ll find woods and a stream that runs pretty much all year round. The second bedroom has a queen bed. The attractive bathroom is a good size with a tub/shower combination. The separate office has a desk, and there is a full-size bed for a teen or a couple of little kids if need be.Then there is the screen porch, large enough for enjoying your morning coffee, or lunch, or dinner if you wish, while watching the wildlife. The hand-built stone fire pit is out back, near the bank of the stream if you want to enjoy the outdoors while actually being outdoors. There is no refrigerator; there is a cooler for your ice and perishables. (Yes, we have a coffee grinder.) The direct vent propane heater is easy to use and super warm. The wood stove stays warm all night too. In the summer, a breeze off the 3,100-foot mountain behind us keeps the container cool, and fire flies and crickets in the field will lull you to sleep.Staying in the cabin is an experience, not a simple overnight. There is something very special about it and this property. You won't want to go to sleep watching shooting stars from the deck on a summer night. On a 20-degree afternoon in the middle of a blizzard, it is 80 degrees and silent inside. Eight guests have gotten engaged here. (All said "yes!") Another guest chopped his bundle of wood into 1,000 toothpick-sized pieces thinking that the fire would burn longer and hotter that way. (It does not.)There are streams and cliffs and tons of wildlife on the property. Owls and red-shouldered hawks soar above the forest cabin, as well as fireflies in the summer. Deer graze in the field and woods and eagles visit now and then. This place was built for two, but it can fit four. Two adults and two kids is perfect. Our 4-season 40-foot container cabin is set on a stream and 20 acres of mountainside wilderness. The 40-footer is a "high cube" container, with 9' 6" ceilings, household 110v electricity, La Colombe coffee service, a dedicated bedroom (with a door and room for a crib or luggage), indoor bathroom with shower, EVERGREEN STITCHES organic percale linens, and a beautiful deck overlooking it's own waterfall and stream. It is not like other tiny home compounds in the area that have dozens of units set 10 feet away from one another. It sits on its own stunning 5-acre parcel in the middle of an old-growth forest, slate ledges, a stream and resident owls and deer.The cabin is toasty in the winter with a propane Rinnai heater—in addition to the wood stove. There is a hammock and an adjacent promontory with a second fire ring and seating. The wood-fired hot tub is very DIY, but amazing once you get it going. The bathroom has a compost toilet and a shower. The sitting area in the cabin is elevated with an L-shaped Ikea Friheten sofa (bedroom has a traditional bed) opposite two contiguous 5'x5' windows to stare at the forest and wildlife. The writing desk is an original Mohonk House secretary. High-efficiency insulated walls and low-energy windows keep the cabin warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There is a refrigerator with a freezer box. The bedroom is like a nature capsule with a 7'x7' picture window at the foot of the bed and a 7'x8' sliding glass door on the south wall.Staying in the cabin is an experience, not a simple overnight. No smoking inside, please, plenty of room to smoke on the deck outside...We have a cell signal booster in the cabin, so service is good.
