On the positive side: The manager, Rajiv, does a great job with clearly limited resources. He is welcoming and helpful. Good tennis court and equipment A bit ordinary: The hotel is taking on an Alice in Wonderland theme, with very strange statues through the grounds, including a very tacky purple rabbits backside heading into the ground. They have caged wild birds, for example Cockatoo’s in the grounds. This is not a good site. OK pool area. Bar closes very early Very few staff around The rooms are not great. Nice beds, but tiny windows so very limited natural light. The negatives: The restaurant, service and standard of cooking is extremely poor. Dinner: There is no price on the limited menu, which is fine, but one normally expects great food when there is no price. The food was bland, with small portions. The starter was served cold. Very disappointing Breakfast: Once again, incredibly poor. On day 1, I asked 3 times for black coffee and was given milky coffee every time. The coffee is not fresh, rather it is from a machine. So I made myself a black coffee. On day 2, we arrived at the restaurant at the opening time of 7am. The doors were closed and we had to let ourselves in. The staff were too busy chatting in the kitchen to even welcome us. Eventually, we ordered. Nothing complicated, but after 45 minutes I had to chase the order. 45 minutes! Meanwhile, another couple had been in, ordered (eggs Benny) and left. The excuse we got was that the cook (he clearly isn’t a chef) was struggling to poach our eggs. This was clearly untrue as he had just made eggs Benny! However, instead of actually communicating with us, the staff ignored us and stayed in the kitchen until we gave up and left, almost 1 hour later. I did raise this with the manager on the telephone and via email, but he just kept repeating that they had a very experienced chef. Well I can tell you, from our experience they do not. It was pretty disgraceful. Avoid this place, it is very understaffed, is low quality and the food and service are woeful. Definitely not worth what they are charging.

An absolutely fabulous boutique hotel in Rotorua ! The grounds are gorgeous with amazing sculptures, beautiful birds, alpacas and bunny rabbits ! Our room was beautifully decorated; the bathroom had a large walk in shower. The staff is friendly & helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and the food was fabulous. Our stay was absolutely faultless and we would highly recommend this gorgeous destination in Rotorua.

Hana Lodge fully deserves a 5 star rating. The moment we drove up the driveway, we thought we were somewhere in France. The awesome view of the beautifully manicured grounds (16 acres, I later found out), garden statues so artistically blending with the landscape, freely roaming wild rabbits and alpacas instantly made us feel that we have found Paradise! And as we approached the Main Hotel building, we cannot help but gasp...WOW! Beautifully restored in a Tudor style so reminiscent of the mid 19th century, this boutique Hotel has 13 rooms all beautifully renovated. We had a king room and it had everything we needed...a huge bathroom with complete amenities & toiletries, complimentary coffee/tea, snacks, you name it and of course, our corner room was so quiet and the bed super comfy, we slept like babies. Breakfast, served in the Main dining room with views of the garden and the lake beyond, was super sumptuous, served with such exquisite tableware & cutlery and was without doubt, fully satisfying. Service was top notch...much thanks to Rajiv, Michele and Ethan (from head office) who made us feel so welcome. It was a pity that we stayed for only one night...but the time we spent at Hana Lodge will always be part of our treasured memories.
