The website showed far more luxurious rooms than we got. It is rated at 4* and we booked a "Superior room". The room was on the 4 th floor and was perfectly comfortable but not 4*. Examples of this were the very narrow twin beds that had very soft and slippy mattress toppers, and the recently polyfilled holes in the bathroom that had not been repainted and finished. However, the bedding was very clean and crisp and there were small chairs on which to sit in the bedroom. There is a lounge area in this hotel, which is very characterful and pleasant to sit in. At night, though, the staff member on duty sits in here too (or sleeps on the settee) which makes it a little less comfortable. All daytime desk staff were very helpful and friendly and offered advice as well as enquiring after our days out.Great ambassadors for front-of-house! There is a strong sewerage smell in the lobby toilet and this needs looking into as it can also be smelt in the lift shaft. A positive is the varied and fresh breakfast each morning. A great range of foods and a chance to try some traditional dishes as well as have familiar tastes. The location of this hotel is extremely handy for walking around the Old Town, which is quite compact and it is possible to walk to most places of interest. The public transport, should you wish to use it, is on the outer side of the Old Town and there is a number 22 bus that takes about 20 mins to get to/from the airport doors. Riga is safe to walk at night and the streets are some of the cleanest we've seen.We booked a Riga tour to Lithuania (the Hill of Crosses) and to see the Rundale Palace and Bauska Castle. Highly recommend this trip. We read other reviews about noise at night from the nearby nightclub but experienced no real noise between 10-midnight. Maybe this was because we were on the 4th floor or maybe it is out of season at present? We slept well though....
