We were aiming to visit the Brew Café in South Queensferry but, despite Google saying that it was open, in fact it was closed. We strolled along the high street to The Little Bakery and having walked through the door, we did an immediate U turn. The orientation of this café should have been perfect. Corner location, windows on 2 sides, but it was just claustrophobic. So where to go? We strolled back along the high street and saw, up some stone steps, a small café on the raised pavement. The Ravenous Beastie has rooms above the small café; the café appears a bit cramped and a bit old school. Basic for want of a better word. I thought we were in for a milky coffee and the cakes looked slightly old fashioned. I was a bit rude; I asked for an espresso with a bit of thick foam on top. I was corrected and told that I was really after a macchiato. Yes please was my response. Well …. The macchiato was excellent. There was a deep depth of flavour in the coffee and the foam sat thick and proud above the glorious black treat. We had ordered a cake. A carrot cake, not a cinnamon bun because they didn’t have one. I cringed when it arrived and poked my fork into the rectangle shaped “cake” {it looked more like a tray bake than a cake}. I slowly lifted the substance to my mouth and ….. what a surprise. It was really quite good. The texture was dense, even tight, the icing on top added to the lushness of the bake. There were walnuts, and a taste of brown sugar, ginger, nutmeg and carrots. I was going to eat less than half, just to show willingness. But in the end, I took more than my share. What a little gem this café was. Shall I return? Without a doubt.
