"This was my second trip to Ol Donyo, my first with clients. I have stayed at many of Great Plains Conservations' camps in Kenya and Botswana. There is a reason I continue to return to their properties year after year. Ol Donyo is a gem located in the stunningly beautiful Chyulu Hills and it is the only lodge (though it has more of a camp feel than a lodge) in the 200 hundred thousand+ acres of land it leases from the Maasai and ensures protection for the Maasai way of life and the wildlife that call it home. Ol Donyo has gone through some refurbishing since my first trip (though I didn't think they needed to improve upon near perfection). The big highlight is the new underground hide at the waterhole that attracts all sorts of animals, including some of the biggest tuskers left in all of Africa. If you don't want to go out for a game drive, you can relax at the hide and gaze at the myriad of animals and birds that come to drink. The rooms all have their own private star beds if you wish to sleep outside under the stars. It is a must, especially when the big pride males come to drink and roar...you feel it reverberate around you! As one comes to expect of Great Plains, the food, service, staff, and guiding is world class. Their properties are so carefully designed to ensure the bush charm of the area is maintained. Ol Donyo definitely upheld this standard. Our guide, Daniel, was exceptional. A super kind human being with a wealth of knowledge of the area. A Maasai himself, our group bombarded him with all kinds of questions about the Maasai and he was very happy to oblige us. He is a great storyteller. All of the guides at Ol Donyo are incredible! Back to the setting. Mt Kilimanjaro dominates the horizon, with vast plains dotted with Umbrella Thorn Acacia (Acacia tortilis) trees which end abruptly at the base of the hills dominated by bush, thickets, and o host of other native trees. The hills were created by a very recent lava flow (geologically speaking) which has created a marvelous setting and Ol Donyo is built such a way as to melt into its surroundings. Flying into camp, you really can see how the lava flow moved along the landscape. The only other people you may see on safari are other guests from the lodge. We were exceptionally lucky to have incredible and numerous cheetah sightings every day (4 day stay), lions literally around the corner from the lodge everyday, lots of giraffe, elephant, eland, baboon, several species of antelope (the gerenuk being one of the very unique species), and more. Ol Donyo should be at the top of the list for a Kenya stay, especially since many of the national parks in Kenya have not been managed very well and are seeing the effects of poorly managed tourism. Ol Donyo and all of the other camps in the Great Plains portfolio are in areas away from those which really adds to the exceptional experience for the guest."
