We arrived at 8:40 after working all day and travelling through the worst rain and winds possible on treacherous roads. The welcome was non existent and we had to wait for someone to come. A young, inexperienced and seemingly untrained and unprepared youngster came - we asked about food and was told nothing hot only sandwiches. Room was £260 per night so this was shocking, no room service, nothing, just sandwiches - we asked her to request the chef make an exception in the circumstances sadly his response was “nope, oven off”. we asked her to ask manager and was told it’s chefs final say but there are takeaways in the town. Fine, so be it, a warm comfy bed and a shower from a long day would solve that! We were taken to our room, I have an injury so we asked for a lift, they do have one, don’t chance it! Very old and rickety and frankly I did not feel at all safe. Still we were hoping things might get better. The photos on here and the web site look fab! Sadly… this was not representative of what we found… We passed through the musty corridors and shabby furniture feeling apprehensive as it was getting late and the hotel is quite remote. We reached the room and as the girl opened the door the smell came through. Awful - I am so sorry to write this, clearly this hotel is someone’s home and business, but the room smelt of cats pee. We left - took the stairs and risked injury over the lift - at reception the front of house girl said she would call the manager for a refund. Suddenly hot food was available and a new room could be found. To be fair the owner was lovely, but front of house had been insistent no food only sandwiches, chef had also , no one cared until we explained we were leaving at which point the owner said , and I quote “look let’s face it where will you go you are in the middle of nowhere” The general feel of the place is that a really good clean up, and a huge investment is needed! And that’s what this beautiful old house needs. Massive investment, skilled and trained staff and a really good clean up. Sadly I think it has gone too far and a wealthy investor is desperately needed, if that happened then the damp smells would go, great staff could be recruited and this would be a very different review. At this point we have asked for a refund and been told that’s not possible as we booked through booking agents! We didn’t, we booked through their website! The property was once beautiful, now it’s sad and damp/musty smelling. The owner I suspect knows this and is frustrated with the circumstance, but when we are away for work or for pleasure we expect a level of care and attention and this hotel, right now, just doesn’t offer it. Again so sad to write this but as the owner said, it’s in the middle of nowhere, where would you go? And I don’t want anyone else to go through what we’ve been through tonight!
