This cabin is 15 min from the AT at mile marker 809.1Please note that this home is in the mountains & it does have a gravel road that curves up to the top. If there is ice on the road during the winter, you will need a heavy 4-wheel drive vehicle to get up to the house. Please consider purchasing Travel Insurance during winter months. This location is in a subdivision, but the gravel road is not state maintained. We are in the mountains so you will encounter some bugs.There is a gas grill and a fire ring. Fire wood is available. The Chestnut HouseThe perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house. A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Start your day off right with a fresh cup of coffee from the coffee bar.With 2 large bedrooms (1 on main level and 1 upstairs), this cottage can comfortably accommodate up to 4 adults and 2 children. Spend afternoons lounging on the front porch, or fire up the grill on the back deck, just steps away from a tranquil stream. In the evenings, gather around the fire pit under a large rock for a night of roasting hot dogs and s'mores.The George Washington and Jefferson National Forest is just a 5-minute drive away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is just 15 minutes away. Tackle off-road adventure through the unpaved national forest access roads, best accessed with a truck or SUV. Within 25 minutes, you can enjoy fishing at three different lakes or multiple trout streams, or take a 20-minute drive to the James River. There is also an off-road ATV trail 15 minutes away. If you're visiting Lynchburg's universities, you'll be just 35 minutes away.There is a security camera that monitors the driveway/parking area and front of the house.Other things to noteWe recommend fueling up and stocking up on groceries and other essentials before arriving. Gas stations and a Dollar General are about 15 minutes away and Walmart in Madison Heights is 25 minutes. Another tip is to pre-download the area using G maps offline feature. Cell service is spotty around the house and National Forest areas. A tv with a Roku stick is available to connect with your streaming accounts. The gorgeous modern kitchen is fully appointed with everything you’ll need for your stay. A dining table and island seating provide plenty of space for you, your friends and family to enjoy meals together. A gas fireplace anchors the upstairs living space, surrounded by comfortable furniture and expansive views of the Priest and Little Priest mountain peaks.Each bedroom is outfitted with a queen bed and both main suites feature a reading nook and attached bathroom.Each full bathroom is stocked with toiletries and towels for your convenience. Additionally, the lower floor couch converts to a full-size sleeper.The lower floor provides a massive recreation space to watch movies and play games, while also carving out a workspace for the road warriors (again, with that amazing view) and a cozy wine bar area to sit and enjoy a glass of your favorite local Virginia wine.Other things to note:Mountain Haven Cottage is situated in Amherst County and sits near the border with Nelson County. Each county is home to some of the best breweries and wineries in VA. You will find Blue Mountain Brewery, Outback Brewing Company, Lovingston Winery, Ankida Ridge Winery, Lazy Days Winery, all within 20 mins of the cottage. Further up route 151 into Nelson County, you’ll find dozens more wineries and breweries only 30-40 minutes away, to include Devil’s Backbone, Three Notch’d, and Bold Rock. For the active adventurers, you’ll find a wide range of hikes in the nearby Priest Wilderness, James River State Park, Mount Pleasant, and Crabtree Falls areas. Wintergreen ski resort is only a short drive away and offers year-round activities for the entire family. For golf enthusiasts, you’ll find the Winton Country Club only minutes down the road or Devil’s Knob course located on the Wintergreen property. Local restaurants in Amherst and Arrington include Bonfire, Vito’s, and Briar Patch.
