We just got back, May trip which is shoulder season in the Caribbean.. Of the 3 beaches 2 were inudated with smelly seawood, the third Shell beach had so much seabed growth it was ridiculous. The hotel was empty , we shared breakfast with a british couple in the dining room two mornings. The management staff was brought in so not warm or charming, the island staff was as always lovely., Except for the female butler Iolia, she was tightly scripted and quoted rules throughout ,overbearing without a speck of natural warm or charm..The hotel decor is British Colonial which can be lovely but not in this instance total overdone kitsch at a high level suffocating in its newness and intensity..,It was supposed to be Sandy Lane 2, without the historical charm.. A usual Dinner $300 plus, a usual lunch $200 plus, would have been fine if the environment wasn't so creepy..I said I wanted to do shopping at the yacht basin, I was told $70 round trip, fine but there are no shops all have left empty spaces, theres a small grocery mart, the recommended restaurant empty and deserted.we just drove back $70 poorer..1 small sail in the basin.I mentioned we would likely want more than the 2 beers in the suite 8 were sent we never touched, we asked they be credited, nope, I thought we'll give them away but to who?In conclusion we chartered a private plane to get the hell out, no refund would be given we were told on leaving early..It was worth it to get away..Stayed at many Mandarin Orientals, finally decided to join their club a couple of years ago..This Mandarin Oriental does not exemplify the rest.. thank god..
