I had the absolute misfortune of staying at Blanket Bay Lodge, and I can honestly say it was one of the worst decisions of my life. From the moment I arrived, I felt more like an inconvenience than a guest. The staff seemed bored and disinterested, acting as if every request I made was a personal affront. So much for “hospitality.” Location & Views: Everyone raves about the views of the lake and mountains, but I barely noticed anything through the haze of frustration. Sure, the scenery is gorgeous if you can ignore the fact that it takes an eternity to get there on winding roads that made me carsick. And once you arrive, you’re practically trapped—there’s nothing else around, so you’re stuck with whatever they decide to offer you on-site. Rooms & Cleanliness: The room was supposedly “luxury,” but I’ve had better nights in budget motels. The linens felt stiff and over-laundered, like sleeping on sandpaper. The décor was bland, outdated, and looked as though it came straight from a mediocre roadside inn. I found dust in every corner and a strange musty smell that lingered no matter how wide I opened the windows. Service & Staff: If you enjoy waiting ages for your food or for any type of assistance, this is the place for you. Housekeeping? Barely saw them. Reception? Half the time they were nowhere to be found, and when they were there, they seemed annoyed at my mere presence. I had to practically beg for basics like fresh towels or an extra pillow. Dining Experience: The meals were overpriced and underwhelming. I’m all for gourmet cuisine, but not when it arrives cold, flavorless, and on a tiny plate that looks more like a garnish than a meal. I ended up craving fast food just to feel satisfied. Good luck getting any special dietary requests fulfilled—staff responses ranged from blank stares to outright shrugs. Amenities & Activities: They brag about all these fancy activities, but you’ll need a small fortune to participate. Even if you do shell out the cash, don’t expect anything special. The so-called “spa” felt more like a cramped bathroom with a lukewarm tub. And if you’re into outdoor adventures, you’d better bring your own gear—what they offer is outdated or unavailable half the time. Value for Money: Honestly, it felt like I was being scammed at every turn. For the exorbitant price I paid, I expected at least basic courtesy and a comfortable stay. Instead, I got mediocre service, dingy rooms, and constant frustration. I’ve stayed in places at a fraction of the cost and had a far more enjoyable experience. Overall: Blanket Bay Lodge is all hype and zero substance. If you’re looking to waste your money, be treated like a burden, and leave feeling disappointed, by all means, book a stay here. Otherwise, save yourself the headache and find literally anywhere else. It can’t possibly be worse than this overrated lodge. Final Word: This place left me questioning every travel decision I’ve ever made. I’d rather camp in my backyard than retur

First and foremost: amazing property in terms of location and upkeep, however - check-in felt quite soulless and lacking, housekeeping were overly present and spread out which I felt like I couldn't escape at times when just trying to relax around the property. Overall I honestly did enjoy the setting and location just not the staff which obviously play a huge part in the stay no matter the property. So therefore, it's hard in this case to look past that aspect. I understand that every individual undoubtedly works hard and I'm sure try's their best. But my encounters, interactions, and observations of staff were sadly just not good during my stay. Especially with Damien Brown who I believed let down and disappointed at such an otherwise prestigious and enjoyable property.

A magical place! We eloped to Blanket Bay in June 2022 and it was an unbelievable experience. Firstly, we can’t thank the staff enough for everything, what a fantastic, genuine group of people. The lodge and surrounds are spectacular. The nightly degustation dinner was some of the best food we have ever eaten. (Goats cheese tortellini with honeycomb, burnt butter & pine nuts was addictive, thanks chef for the extra portion) Other highlights, the room with mountain views, dinner by the outdoor fireplace, the lake for a cold plunge, cocktail hour & the overall interior & ambiance throughout the lodge. Oh, and we were lucky enough to wake up and see Blanket Bay covered in snow. Thanks again Blanket Bay! Katie + Lawrence

This was the last lodge we stayed in on our two week tour of the South Island. We had previously just visited The Bay of Many Coves, The Lindis and Mahu Whenua, so had both been really spoiled and had our expectations ratcheted up. No fear - Blanket Bay did not disappoint, held its head up and in various respects poked it out of the top of the sunroof! The lodge is stunning. Think Old world charm with lots of reclaimed wood (I recommend flicking through the book on the history of the lodge in the sitting room). Our room - the smallest you can get - was lovely and more than large enough. The food was truly outstanding and the service was at another level. People you’d never met knew your name and what your food foibles were and everyone was both attentive and interesting. The Lodge has a number of chefs, which meant that even though we had 5 course dinners, they did not take 3 hours like at other lodges. I’m happy to linger, but by the time you’re on your 40th or so meal over a two week holiday, this was somewhat of a blessing. We only got to spend two days at Blanket Bay, but did get to hike for a couple of hours up the Routeburn Track. If you’re up to it, this is well worth it. The scenery is stunning. Due to jet lag, I’m typing this in the middle of the night having just got back to the UK. It is bringing a warm feeling of lovely memories that I will cherish. I don’t know when we’ll be back in the South Island, but I’m sure no trip will be complete without a stay at this fabulous lodge.

lam shocked! The front desk team is unprofessional. I checked in their suite and the size is good. The moment I walk in the room, the main door hardly can closed. The rate that I pay for is not worth it. There are so many mosquitos everywhere in the room. They have a garden patio walk out but not serve any purpose without view. They should inform the clients before hand how long the hotel been operating and even the lift need to upgrade soon. We had to wait for sometime going down. In our suit smell from sewage was so bad, that I woke up in night because of its smell. I'm so disappointed. Not as nice as the pictures suggest at all. They try to rip you off for every penny. Everything you may expect to be included an another resort will include free, they will charge for, at insane rates.
