The Kings Arms has a lot going for it. Good location, easy parking and a legacy of good food / service. We visited today for a family Sunday lunch. Immediately the place felt different. Little bit grubby, the restaurant team we’re doing a job but there was no interaction. The menu is much reduced, which is often a good sign of pending quality and at just over double the average price for a Sunday lunch, we were hopeful. The reality was roast beef that was bland and impossible to cut (I gave up on mine and gave it to the dog), over cooked taste my potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding that was technically a pancake. The veg was well cooked and tasted good. Nobody checked on us during our meal. Even when one of us asked for a steak knife to try and cut the beef, that didn’t prompt a question “is everything OK”? When the plates were cleared by the gent who looked like he may be the manager, and it was clear that most of us had given up, that could have been a chance to ask if we had enjoyed our meal. The chef should have shown a concern that most of the food he has worked hard to prepare was coming back uneaten. When we decided to skip dessert and leave, and asked for the bill that again could have been a chance to ask if we had enjoyed our meal. When we were paying there was another chance to ask if we had enjoyed our visit. Nobody ever took time to check on us. I watched the other tables and those were not checked either. When nobody takes the time to ask you how you enjoyed your visit, it installs a belief that either a. You know what the answer is going to be so you don’t ask it or b. You kind of don’t care. Shame.
