My wife and I took a self drive touring holiday on South Island New Zealand from the 17th March to the 11th April 2023. Apart from the first 2 nights and the last night where we stayed in a hotel in Christchurch we were self catering and stayed in accommodation that offered cooking facilities. I have reviewed each of the hotel/motels we stayed in. The following reviews cover the accommodation and some of the facilities/visits we made on the trip. If you would like to view the rest of the reviews please click on my username and all my reviews will be listed. 9th to 12th days of our self drive tour of South Island March/April 2023 Asure Exporer Motel Te Anau. We stayed at the Explorer Motel for four nights from 23rd to 27th March. Welcome. We were welcomed by the owner Mary who gave us some milk. Mary showed us two different apartments and gave us a choice of which one to take. We took a room on the first floor. Mary was very nice and provided us with a lot of information about the area, the various trips and where to eat including The Te Anau Club. This is a type of working mens club, but open to non members. (See my separate review) Mary kindly booked us on a trip to Marlborough Sound for the following day. Service. Both Nigel and Mary were very accommodating. Nigel carried our suitcases up the stairs for us. Our room was serviced every day and the cleaner even cleared and put away our washing up. Location. The Motel is located on the edge of the town centre. There are a number of restaurants and a medium size supermarket about 5 minutes walk away. Comfort. The room was quite large, one of the largest we stayed in on our trip. It was very nice. It was light and airy and decorated to a high standard. It contained a king bed, a queen bed, armchairs, a coffee table, a dining table and chairs and a kitchenette with microwave, standard fridge, cooking utensils and an electric frying pan. The unit did not have a hotplate but Nigel the co-owner provided us with a portable hotplate and two saucepans. We were able to cook all the meals we needed to. There was a large flat screen TV. The bathroom was nice and reasonably large with an excellent shower and electric wall heater. The room had wide patio doors and a balcony with table and chairs overlooking the well kept garden. Cleanliness. The room and bathroom were very clean. The bedding was clean and good quality. The towels were good quality. WiFi. The WiFi was a bit patchy. Mary allowed me to use the motel’s private network so that I got a stronger signal. Mary and Nigel are planning to improve the Wifi network and have engaged a consultant to make improvements. So if you come to The Explorer Motel from now on the WiFi should be better. Conclusion. Overall this was one of the best places we stayed at during our 4 week tour.. Comfortable, clean and the owners were very nice and accommodating. If we returned to Te Anau we would stay here again.
The 2 bedroomed apartment could have been better if there had been a second bathroom. The main bedroom was very cramped but had spectacular views across the lake. The second bedroom was well appointed with lots of room. The lounge could have been better with a second sofa. This apartment was booked to accommodate 4 adults (2 x couples). Disappointed to find people walking on the patio to our apartment at all times of the day and evening and peering in through the windows.
I stayed here for about a week over late December 2021 and early January 2022. New Zealand was still largely closed to international tourists due to COVID-19 border restrictions and a number of accomodation providers were't open. There was good availability with accomodation providers that were open. Te Anau was busy without being crowded, very pleasant. In many ways the Bella Vista Motel is a delightful place to stay. The owners are friendly, welcoming and helpful. It's only five minutes walk from the town which has a good supermarket and some excellent cafes, restaurants and food caravans. The bed was incredibly luxurious with a comfortable mattress and 5 star hotel quality sheets and linen. However, the room was small. There wasn't a lot of additional space apart from the bed. One of the reasons I choose a motel rather than a hotel was because of cooking facilities. Most motel units have a kitchen or kitchenette. The Bella Vista has different kinds of rooms, some with full kitchen facilities and others with more limited cooking options, and their online reservation system did specify these. Moreover, due to browser issues I found booking online to be quite complicated. When I checked into my room I found that the kitchen facilities were extremely limited, almost non existent. I could make coffee and tea and prepare toast in the morning on the extremely small bench space and that was it. There might have been a microwave, but I don't use microwaves so it wasn't an option. I ended up getting most of my meals for dinner at the amazing Bao Now caravan, some of the best street food I've ever had anywhere. The kitchenette area, a small bench above a fridge also did not have its own tap, water or sink. I had to get water and wash dishes in the bathroom sink, just along from the toilet, which wasn't particularly pleasant. The other aspect about the rooms were that, at least surrounding the room I was staying in, there was virtually no soundproofing. I could hear almost everything in other rooms - conversations (even when people were speaking quietly), television, showers and flushing toilets. This was not generally a problem as fellow guests were quiet and respectful and lights seemed to be out by 10pm. The limited soundproofing (at least in the room I was staying in) didn't cause any major problems sleeping, but it could if the rooms were occupied by guests who like to stay up late. Generally the lack of full kitchen facilities, small room size and limited soundproofing didn't cause any problems as I was out everyday hiking, cycling, and going on float plane and helicopter trips. However, when staying for a reasonable amount of time in a place (such as a week) I sometimes like to have a break mid-week and relax for a day where I'm staying. This wasn't really that possible here. Admittedly I did get the smallest and cheapest room. I would have paid more for a larger room with full kitchen facilities (these are availa

訪訪客Wonderful motel, clean, comfortable, and quiet! Lovely decor, felt like a luxury hotel room! We loved it. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. We needed to do laundry, they happily gave us the change needed and showed us the laundry and soap. So convenient. It was a very short walk to the lakefront and downtown. We would heartily recommend to everyone!
訪訪客We travel very often and can honestly say we have never been welcomed so friendly and treated so great. Although an older building, it was very clean and welcoming. Room was very spacious with a small living area. Coffee station and toiletries was very good. We had a room with a reasonable lake view. We had to do some laundry while there. It was so easy in huge machines. We stayed there on by birthday and was treated with a lovely breakfast. Although a small selection, it was extremely tasty and freshly made. We wanted to stay for breakfasts on other mornings but could not as we had to leave early. Thank you so much for an awesome stay. Will be back again.
