From the minute we arrived the greetings from the reception team were warm and friendly . My husband had booked a Spa Suite package for our wedding anniversary. When we opened the door to our suite I was completely aghast at the luxury and design of the accommodation, it was breathtaking. We had a huge hot tub , sauna, steam room , Infrared and massage chair . We had a box of spa products and a bottle of champagne waiting for us on the table . We ate in both restaurants ( Source & Spice ) we enjoyed Spice the most with a very cleverly crafted blend of Jamaican, Thai , Japanese , Indian cuisine . Breakfast was such a laid back, leisurely experience, no rushing , just great staff serving great food . There has to be a few mentions here , Gilpins Alchemist Will , who was an absolute genius with his cocktail menu , his attention to detail , his passion and knowledge and his theatrical, highly skilful “moving & shaking” a delight to watch and converse with . Thanks Will for making our evenings so memorable. Next , Chanelle Head Sommelier, for her energy and delight in sharing her extensive wine collection with us , she just exuded warmth and passed on information about the wines with such knowledge and joy. Thank you Chanelle. Everywhere we went , any time of day or evening there was Harry , looking after everybody , restaurant manager of Source, but so much more than that , he appeared to be the backbone of the Hotel , such a great Guy . Thanks Harry . Breakfast just wouldn’t have been the same without Grace , she just made our mornings brighter and lighter ( despite the grim weather) she was a breath of fresh air and made every guest feel special . Thanks Grace so much . It’s a Family Hotel, you can absolutely get that , all the staff were exceptional and apologies for the ones that I haven’t mentioned by name , especially the 2 great reception staff who met us when we first arrived and chatted with us throughout our stay as if we were friends . The dedication , commitment and excellent service was consistent across the whole team . What a find , what a haven , it has to be an annual treat from now on !
We'd been really looking forward to our stay, which was a treat from my husband for my birthday. Both of us had visited before but not since it was re-styled and we had picked Linthwaite so that we could try another Michelin-starred restaurant at the Henrock restaurant there. Sadly, although the hotel itself is lovely, and some of the staff were excellent, several things really let it down. On arrival we noticed a small sign stating 'reception' pointing to the left that was attached to the right-hand door of a set of double doors, so we assumed we needed to go through the left hand door. As we opened it, rather than a hello, or can I help, someone just barked at us that 'reception's that way'. Check-in was then slightly odd as we were told we'd be shown around the hotel, which would've been a nice touch had one of the two staff attending to us thought to offer to take our bags to our room or to keep them at reception whilst we were shown round. Instead, we had to keep hold of them which then meant the staff member showing us round kept saying 'you've got your bags with you so I won't show you this, can't show you that' etc, rendering the 'tour' pointless. Once we had settled into our room we went for a drink at the bar. No-one was behind the bar when we walked in so we were just stood at the bar looking at what was on offer and discussing what we might order. After around 1 minute, the barman walk led in and again, no hello, welcome, or what can I get you etc, just 'sit down please' . We were puzzled and my husband said 'could we have a drink' and the barman repeated again 'sit down please'. When we said we'd like to sit at the bar, he seemed annoyed. No other customers were around. The food at the Henrock restaurant was really good - we had the tasting menu and the service broadly good too, but twice during the meal we had to wait long enough for something that we said to each other 'they must've forgotten...' We also had an incident later in the evening where we were trying to get out to the outdoor seating area. We had seen another couple struggle with the door earlier. After several attemots, eventually I opened the door but had to use such force I injured my hand as it caught between the handle and frame. My fingers are still swollen a day later and it's sore to grip anything. It really shouldn't be this difficult for guests to access the outside tables, especially as the door in question is a fire exit. Finally, we were told on arrival that our breakfast would be at 9am. In all honesty, I couldn't remember for sure if they had contacted me and asked us to choose a time in advance or if 9am was dictated to us, but in any case, since we made the hotel booking, a work commitment came up for my husband that meant 9am would be too late, so we asked at reception after dinner whether we could change it to 8am. Without even checking any records, we were told no as the hotel was fully booked. Not 'i'll see what i can do' or 'I'm sorry but...', jus

Victorian House was incredible. The room was perfect and the breakfast and staff were so wonderful. They were very accommodating and went out of their way to make me a vegan Full English at breakfast. I honestly loved every moment of our time there. We came up from London but were visiting from America, my only regret is not booking there for longer. We are intending to return and will be staying there again when we do.

The hotel is more like a private house with rooms. We got a small suite with bedroom, bathroom and living room. We could just about see the lake from the living room.
The bathroom only has a bath and no shower head which was a difficulty for washing hair. Except for that it was very well organised.
Breakfast was at a nearby pub - The Good Sport. It was a limited selection on the menu: full English, breakfast rolls, toast or porridge. You also got a 10% for dinner in the pub too.
Last week my husband and I got married in this beautiful hotel chosing the ”Just Us” package along with a few extra guests. We all had the most wonderful time and the day was just magical! From start to finish the whole experience was exceptional. From first viewing the hotel and booking our ceremony, all of the correspondence with the ceremony planner leading up to our big day, everything was seamless and nothing was too much trouble. Even our labrador Barney was made to feel at home with his own little welcome pack The hotel is in the most beautiful location and all of the staff who work there were amazing, working so hard to make our day special. The gardens are lovingly and beautifully cared for which makes this one of the most gorgeous locations overlooking the lake. The food, including afternoon tea and evening meals were exquisite. The only downside was the sadness we felt having to leave this fabulous location. But we will definitely be back in the future.

Booked through ******* where this hotel had a rating of 9. I would put at nearer a 7. Rooms were ok….clean and comfortable enough. En-suite was nice as had been refurbed. Communal areas tired. Breakfast area and restaurant more like a cafe. I had the garlic mushrooms with lemon and time on bruschetta with a side salad, this was a starter as a main. Really weird flavor….really didn’t enjoy. Creamy garlic mushrooms would have been nicer….the bruschetta wasn’t toasted hardly and was soggy…£9. Hubby lasagne was nice £17. Noticed someone getting sausage and mash in a smallish bowl. Two sausages and a bit of mash….£19.50! 😳 Also saw on the menu a cheesecake dessert was £9.50!!! Expensive and average! Breakfast was awful….cold plates, barely cooked bacon and sausage….hash browns that you couldn’t even cut into….just not nice! Staff were friendly enough but on arrival our tv wasn’t working….husband went down twice to advise….as he was desperate to watch the football. Was told it would be 8pm (2 hours) before anyone could help. Was offered another room instead but when he went to look at it he said it was a bit grim dark and dingy so stayed where we were and managed to get tv going. Then we realised we weren’t given the WiFi password when checked in so back down to reception he went….more than a little annoyed by this time! Anyway overall as I said just bang average….just off a really busy road too so road noise from our room was bad too….the header photo on ******* had a water view so that’s where we thought it was set. Wouldn’t stay again…..would have rather spent my money elsewhere….costly average experience 👎
