The Study at the University of Chicago

Do not stay at this hotel. I travel over 80 days a year at Marriotts, and this is what happens when you book a non-established hotel group. I arrived after midnight. The hotel indicated I was a no-show, and they charged me 280.59 after checking in to shower before my hospital meetings. They charged me another full day, 292.33, for only being in my room for a few hours. I explained to the manager I had already paid, but he insisted on charging me twice even though I checked out in compliance with my original booking dates and times.

I cannot say enough about The Study at University of Chicago! Everyone involved in guest services is amazing, far exceeding that of any other. Always thoughtful, accommodating, polished (and smiling!), they are committed to exceeding guests' expectations and needs. Not only are they wonderful at what they do, but they seem to enjoy doing it. On my most recent visit, it was Cornelius, Janaieve, and Lex who went out of their way to make my stay extra special, along with Truth Be Told's Tina and Carsten. But that is not to say that others did not also play an important part, only that I didn't get everyone's name. Add to that the beautifully appointed and spotless rooms, the lovely amenities, aesthetically calming ambience, wonderful campus location, and delightful Truth Be Told menu and surroundings, and I have to say that The Study at University of Chicago is my favorite getaway for a long list of great reasons. Thank you all!

We attended the hotel for my half marathon event. The room was nice but amenities were low, no coffee/tea, no hair conditioner, low on shower soap. We called ahead to ask about parking and told to use the valet, they did not advise street parking was free (we found out from a friend). The evening before we made a reservation for dinner at the restaurant desk but were never called. When we returned an hour later, we were seated immediately without a name or phone number. At 7am my husband and son ordered room service for breakfast with the front desk while I was starting the race. They were confirmed and charged. They waiting an hour and half before calling down to be told there was no breakfast and the kitchen was closed, refund on its way. They said fine, then we will check out and asked for the valet. Another half an hour goes by as they try to find the car. By the time they get the car the race is ended and they, after running themselves, miss the finish and arrive hungry, tired, and annoyed. We will not be attending again unfortunately.

On Saturday, July 20th we checked into The Study. I booked this room months in advance and about a week prior to our arrival, I received an email from the hotel asking what time to expect us. I replied that we would be there at approximately noon, and they let me know that they would look forward to seeing us then. When we arrived a couple minutes after noon, I was informed by the front desk that our room was not yet ready. I asked for an ETA and the employee explained that she could not provide one because she had just gotten there. While frustrating, this did not seem like a big deal since check in at hotels is frequently after 1 PM- however, I was confused as to why they sent me an email asking when to expect us. We waited in the lobby for nearly 2 hours until we were informed that our room was ready for us. Upon entering the room, it was clear that it had been hastily cleaned. Many surfaces were dirty, grimy, or smudgy- which raised concerns about how sanitary it was. We went out for the day and arrived back at the hotel at approximately 1 AM for bed. When I went to roll down the shades, I noticed that there were two rollers, but one of them was bare (missing a curtain). To my unfortunate surprise, I was awakened at about 6 AM when the sun rose. It was the blackout curtain that was missing (see photos). Let me conclude this review by saying that had this been a $150 hotel room, I would have been disappointed but not felt the need to voice it. However, I paid over $240 in total for a single night in what can only be described as sub-par, less than mediocre suite. I would not recommend this hotel.

Very well appointed rooms and excellent service. Our bed was super clean and very comfortable. We booked a block of rooms for family and friends to stay during my daughter's wedding weekend. The staff was extremely helpful in making that happen. Booking the Presidential Suite for wedding prep for the bridal party and then the first night for the newlyweds was a great idea. It was perfect. We truly appreciated the Dear Charles opening up especially for us for our private afterparty. We would definitely recommend booking this hotel if you're visiting Johns Hopkins University or, really, anywhere in Baltimore!

I was especially glad to have dinner on my first night in the Study restaurant and bar. The Bangers and Mash were splendid! (I hadn't had them for decades) and so was the Guinness on tap! By the way, the room was great too. It doesn't hurt for one person to have plenty of room.
