This was my fourth or fifth stay at the Grand Hotel des Alpes{ " the Hotel"). It is always a wonderful experience. Our room was on the Mt. Blanc side overlooking the river. If you have driven to Chamonix, the Hotel has underground secured parking. The Hotel is a 15 minute, level walk to the cable car that transports a group of approximately 30 to the observation deck for Mt Blanc named the Aiguille du Midi The elevation of the top deck is 3,842-metres-tall (12,605 ft) The upper entrance is accessed through a permanent walk through, narrow ice tunnel An issue to consider is that the top of Mt. Blanc may be obscured by clouds. To avoid a disappointment, cable car tickets may be purchased on site rather than in advance on line. There is a small restaurant plus restrooms at the top. The Hotel itself does not have a restaurant. However, there are many fairly priced restaurants in Chamonix. The Hotel is immaculate plus fully modernized. I had misplaced the train ticked code from Lyon to Paris. The reception staff assisted me to retrieve. The effort took 1.5 hours by two Reception employees, Merci Beaucoup On previous visits, I have taken shuttle buses from Geneva, Thus trip we rented a car in Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport. There are multiple 2 hour trains from the Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport TGV station to Paris Lyon Gare I believe the simplest journey path is to fly direct to Paris Charles de Gaulle("CDG") then take high speed trains after that direct out of CDG to anywhere in Europe. Do Not rent a car to stay in Paris. Too many headaches. But its easy to drive external France using a rental car. Trains while fast and scenic, a passenger is required to handle their own bags. My travel partner had one roll on and one normal size bag. She is in great physical condition therefore the bags were not an issue. I travel with just a roll on.
