We absolutely loved our stay at the Hotel Gunther. This small family run hotel was our first stop on a 16 day trip to Germany. We arrived by train from the Frankfurt airport after an overnight flight and were exhausted. We had planned to taxi to the hotel but it was literally a 5 minute walk (downhill) from the train station so walk we did. We were greeted by Scott who welcomed us and gave us some very good information to get us started on our vacation. Our room was on the front of the hotel, facing the Rhine with a balcony. The room itself was spacious and had a sofa. We loved the balcony and sitting out there in the mornings and evenings watching the boat traffic go by. The hotel does not have AC but there was a fan in our room. It was coolish when we were there so this was not an issue at all. The location is top notch. We took the train to Rudesheim to catch a KD cruise back to Boppard which was a highlight of our vacation. The train use is free within the region with a Boppard guest card that the hotel gives you upon check in . As per Scott, by crossing the river to Filson (on a ferry) and catching the train there we could ride free all the way to Rudesheim, which is also a lovely town. Boppard is a nice town, the main square and restaurants all within a short walking distance, however, be warned, everything shuts down early and the town gets very quiet. Some nights we had trouble finding a restaurant open if it was a bit later. The visitor Information Centre in the Main Square was also very helpful and close. Our anniversary was our first morning there and we were surprised with a small bottle of Champagne - a nice touch. Breakfast is not included but costs 11 Euro a day. You just have to tell them the night before. We did this two of our 4 mornings, opting to try a cafe downtown the other mornings (which was also nice - but more expensive). If we had any nit picky things to say would be the bathroom is so small and hard to maneuvre. The showerhead is at an awkward angle to even get under to shower. There is literally no place to hang a robe, put your makeup etc. Very tight. No fridge, would be nice to have a small fridge. There is a kettle in the room but only tea, no coffee. We would have loved to have had a coffee on our balcony in the mornings. (we did ask and the first time were told no, the 2nd time were given a very small amount of decaf instant coffee, also asked if we could come down and purchase a pot of coffee to bring back up and also told no) I would definately recommend this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to return if we ever find our travels back in that area. Its a great base location for your time in the Rhine Region.
