The upcoming Sandars 2023 Lecture, titled "We have places that have been famous for binding, as Cambridge, Eton, and London," draws inspiration from John Bagford's observations in the 1700s. Dr. David Pearson will deliver this second lecture, focusing on the chronological narrative of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Cambridge binding work. While many of these works are yet to gain recognition, the lecture will shed light on the distinguishing features of Cambridge bindings during this period. The lecture will also touch upon notable binders, acknowledging that identifying them might not always be possible. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of binding styles and qualities offered by Cambridge workshops, enabling them to contemplate the motivations behind these choices. Additionally, a comparison with Oxford, another prominent British binding center outside London, will be made. This lecture is open to all and completely free, though booking is required.
