Plant Hunters and Pioneers’ is a brief history of the remarkable, once famous Exeter-based nurseries of James Veitch & Sons. This pioneering business operated for nearly 200 years over five generations of the Veitch family giving us all an enormous gardening legacy today. 
Caradoc Doy is a trained horticulturist and has been studying the work of Veitch for over 20 years. This fascinating illustrated talk covers many of their well-known plant introductions as well as some of their landscaping work and tells some incredible stories of some of their intrepid plant hunters who travelled in many far away countries in search of colourful plants we now grow in our homes and gardens today. 
These journeys were often very dangerous and come with many interesting stories, a few of which are covered in this historical talk which will appeal to the gardener and non-gardener alike. Many of their plant introductions are now extinct or rare and Caradoc is also working to track some of the rare plants down to help conserve them.
The talk is inside the historic village church of Broadclyst, and is part of the flower festival, with displays including from the fuscia and orchid societies and decorations by well known florist and author, Sarah Pepper. 
Refreshments available in the church with proceeds in aid of church funds.
