ClassicsFest, titled "Tomorrow's Writers Decode the Past," is an upcoming cultural festival in Newcastle, North East England. This exciting pilot project, presented by the Literary and Philosophical Society in collaboration with Newcastle University's School of History, Classics, and Archaeology, aims to explore the voices of the ancient Greeks and Romans through the lens of contemporary artists, thinkers, and academics. The festival will take place from March 7th to March 9th, 2024, coinciding with International Women's Day.

ClassicsFest will feature an open access program curated by Cinzia Hardy, focusing on the universal theme of women and love in the ancient world. The inspiration for this exploration comes from "Heroides" by the Roman poet Ovid. Written two thousand years ago, "Heroides" consists of poems in the form of letters from female characters to mythical heroes. The festival will spotlight four contemporary retellings of these letters in the form of dramatic monologues, performed by professional actors and speaking to modern audiences.

All events at ClassicsFest are free but require booking, unless otherwise stated. The festival is made possible thanks to the generous support of The Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, The David Family Foundation, Sir James Knott Trust, as well as the Classics FEC committee of Newcastle University's School of History, Classics, and Archaeology and the Engagement and Place fund.
