We start our commemoration of the General Strike centenary with an event to celebrate Red Friday, July 1925.
Red Friday was a victory for the miners. It marked a significant moment when the government backed down and granted a subsidy to the mining industry to prevent wage reductions and mine closures.
It was a temporary victory.
The state responded by bolstering its security measures and preparing legislation to counteract potential industrial actions. Propaganda campaigns were launched to sway public opinion against the perceived dangers of communism and union power. The government meticulously planned its strategy to maintain control, anticipating the battles that loomed on the horizon.
