About the book: Set against the backdrop of World War II, this gripping narrative follows the contrasting paths of Anna and Hayden Schmitt, siblings hailing from Munich, Germany. Despite being raised under the same roof, their personalities diverge starkly: Anna, a staunch advocate for her convictions, while Hayden strives for acceptance from his peers at any cost. Fearing for their children's safety in Nazi Germany, Anna and Hayden's parents make the difficult decision to send them to live with relatives in Paris. However, this move leads to a growing chasm between the siblings. In the City of Lights, their once-close bond fractures amidst the complexities of friendships, romantic entanglements, and their differing approaches to navigating the perilous German occupation. As they grapple with these divergent paths, their lives become entwined with the struggles and challenges of wartime Paris.

Learn more about the fest at https://www.ohioana.org/programs/ohioana-book-festival Pop out a world of wonder! Watch as young minds come alive as they pop out pieces, then fold and glue together buildings, vehicles, and friendly faces. Making a bustling town encourages hours of imaginative play--perfect for little architects and builders who love the tactile joy of building blocks and Lego-like toys. Growing up, Merrill Rainey spent most of his Saturday afternoons watching monster movies, drawing superheroes, and going on imaginary adventures with his siblings. Today, he is a cowboy-boot-wearing, award-winning illustrator, designer, and paper engineer. Merrill likes to experiment with art tools and uses marker, cut paper, or water soluble graphite to create his illustrations. Merrill lives in the historic town of Maumee, Ohio, with his editor (his wife), subject matter experts (his kids), and very opinionated coworkers (two pups, two goldfish, and some crabby hermit crabs).

More about “Counted Out”
“Counted Out” investigates the biggest crises of our time. Political polarization. Racial biases. Social injustice. Economic inequity. Climate change. And a global pandemic. All viewed through a previously unseen lens: math.
In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we can access, the jobs we get is all underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice.
But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy — whether we can speak the language of math — is a critical determinant of social and economic power.
Through a mosaic of personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, “Counted Out” shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people?” Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society — and can help shape it?
The film’s voices include the late civil rights icon Robert Moses as well as Talithia Williams, associate professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd University and TEDx speaker of “
Own Your Body’s Data
,” Julia Angwin, investigative journalist and founder of
Proof
, Steven Levitt, co-author of “Freakonomics.”
